For some bizarre reason I've been craving new clothes lately, something that doesn't often happen. As a plus-size woman--or whatever your preferred euphemism is--shopping isn't a lot of fun since I don't like synthetics, stretch fabrics, or the fugly colors and patterns the clothing manufacturers think appropriate to my size. Fortunately I have two resources for avoiding shopping:
Unique Patterns, which will make a custom-sized pattern based on a complete (and I do mean complete) set of measurements taken by a laser bodyscanner, and Rita, who will sew anything for me as long as I cut out the pattern pieces, the one part of sewing she doesn't enjoy.
So I dug around in the basement and found the fabric I bought the last time I had the urge to update my wardrobe, an urge that was derailed by the difficulty of finding patterns that fit correctly. I've ordered three new patterns, plus the three I already have. There's one piece of fabric that I'm dying to make a jacket out of, but it's for the new pattern, which won't get here for another three weeks, damn it. So in the meantime I'm cutting out blouses.
I already have five blouses made with the existing pattern--two silk, two cotton, and one rayon. The funny thing is that so far no one has ever commented on the fact that they're all from the same pattern. They're enough different because of the fabrics that they don't look at all alike.
By the way--complete set of measurements? 28 separate measurements, plus an additional two because my left and right shoulders aren't quite identical. They're close enough that my patterns don't come with different left and right sides, but Unique will customize a pattern that way if necessary.
