Shh, don't tell my mother!

This is one of my mother's Christmas presents--one of (currently) 234.

That's me on the right, my brother on the left, and my mother in the middle. If you guessed that this was taken a while ago--you're right!

My mother has a collection of slides going back from before I was born. We don't own a slide projector anymore, so she hasn't seen any of these pictures in years. I'm not sure I've seen all of them ever. A couple of years ago I did a search of the house to gather up as many as I could find, but I never found an affordable place to get them scanned that I trusted not to lose them. So her Christmas present this year is a slide scanner and a digital picture frame, only her real present is that I'm scanning them myself and loading them into the frame along with more recent digital-only pictures.

So far I've scanned 234 pictures today, in secret. I have at least two more boxes the same size and three full slide carousels to go. I'm penciling the file name (a number) on each slide as I scan it so we can go back and clean and get professionally scanned any really important pictures that need it. The scans are five megapixel--the photo above was compressed for download speed.

Years ago when I was in high school, I gave my mother a new address book for Christmas. It was a small, cheap present, except that I stayed up Christmas Eve after sneaking her old, falling to bits address book out of her purse and copied every single address into the new address book. She's still using the thing twenty-three years later! This is a very similar sort of present, only the materials costs more.
