Once they got on the plane there would be plenty of time to talk, to figure out who they were. But now all she had time to do was pack clothing and grab case files. She had no problem with leaving the country for a case-she was rather partial to traveling anyway-but with an hour’s notice? Some HR person was pushing efficiency too far. Working undercover wasn’t something she had done much of in the past few years, nor had her partner. This was going to be an interesting trip…
She took a cab to the airport and quickly found her partner chatting sweetly with the lady behind the ticket counter. She walked up beside him and smiled politely to the fake blonde who immediately started getting to business as though she had been doing exactly that the whole time. “Two tickets to…Bo-go-ta?”
“Bogotá, si.”
The lady stared at her for a moment. “Oh! That means yes, right? One of these days I really should take Spanish.” She clicked away on the computer for a few moments before asking for their ID and bags.
A few minutes later, as they were walking away, Carolyn sighed. “It is amazing how easily people prove their stupidity.”
“At least she didn’t say she should take Mexican.” Mike grinned as he walked through the metal detector.

Four hours later they were half an hour into the flight. "What's the story?"
“I am Mike Ackerman and you are Carolyn Ramos-Ackerman.”
She nodded. “Scottish decent?”
“Yeah, something simple so there’s no suspicion. We lost all out money in the dot com bust and have been bitter about it ever since. We’re trying to regain some if not all of our riches by going into the cocaine business.”
“That it?”
“There’s a file for you to read, but it’s in the bags above us. Oh, and the captain thinks it’d be more convincing if you showed up in a dress. He didn’t think you would agree to it so he got Alex to lend you one.” Mike smirked as he stood up to get the small duffle bag with the outfit Alex had lent them while Carolyn glared. She stood up and moved into the aisle, begrudgingly taking the bag from him and headed to the back of the plane to change in one of the bathrooms.
Mike continued digging through the bags, finally finding the file and tossing it on her seat before going back in. A few minutes later his hand closed around the small box and he pulled it out, opening it just to make sure it was what he was looking for before closing up the overhead compartment and sitting down. Just as he did though, a flight attendant walked by. She was a young women, pretty-like they all have to be-but not overly gorgeous. Nothing more than what you’d find in a tabloid magazine while waiting in line at the supermarket.
She smiled excitedly. “Is that ring for the woman you’re with?”
“Uh, yes.”
“Oh wow, what an interesting place to propose. She’s going to be so happy.” Her eyes suddenly went wide at a thought, making Mike’s eyes go wide as if he was a deer in the headlights. “Come to the front of the plane! She can’t say no with everyone looking on! It’ll be just like in the movies. Come on.” She pulled him up and walked him to the front of the cabin. “What’s your name?”
“Mike. Look lady, you really have the wrong-“
“Everyone! Mike here is going to propose right here on the plane! How cute is that?” She even tilted her head a little.
What a sap. Mike thought. Shit, this was going to be interesting…
A few minutes later, Carolyn walked out wearing a
dark green knee-length dress. Alex has taste. She didn’t notice the passengers who watched her every move as she walked up to her seat and placed the duffle bag containing the cloths she had been wearing back in the overhead compartment.
“Come on! Do it now or you’ll never have the courage!” The flight attendant was almost jumping up and down, trying to keep her voice down but not succeeding very well as Carolyn looked up and spotted them where they stood. She walked over.
“Found another one?” The lady elbowed Mike and he looked down at her, grimacing slightly. “What’s going on?”
Mike sighed. “Fine.” He got down on one knee and opened the small box, revealing the department ring. “Will you be my wife?”
She just stared for a moment. “You’re kidding me.”
“Well… No, not exactly.”
“Oh come on! Can’t you tell he’s in love with you? Ask anyone on the plane. You can’t say no to him, you just can’t!”
Carolyn didn’t say anything for a second; this was all too weird. “Yes.” At this the flight attendant did start jumping up and down and people throughout the plane clapped. Mike put the ring on her finger and stood up awkwardly. “Can I…talk to you?” She glanced around the cabin. “Privately?” He nodded and she took his hand, leading him to the back of the plane where hopefully people would eavesdrop less. “What the hell was that?”
“I didn’t have a choice. The stewardess saw the ring and made me do it.” They had their voices down so no one could hear but that didn’t stop someone from calling out.
“Kiss her!” Both of them looked out quickly, trying to find who had said that.
Another voice, “Do it!”
Mike took a deep breath. “Whaddya say? We probably need to get this over with now anyway.”
“Fine. But you’re sleeping on the couch tonight.”
