Oooh! :3 This is awesome! :3 Lonelyplanet.com is where I found a bunch of useful tips. They have a FAQ on each country that features a lot of repeat questions. On it they had a link to a guy's MASSIVE site that was born and raised in Brazil and specifically geared to travelers that want the insider info.
If Fodor's travel guides are good I'll check them out. :3 I think I had one in my stack when I was up at B&N but didn't get to it. The thing that gets me is travel guides that are all text and no pictures. Or no clear COLOR pictures. I'm a visual learner and you can tell me something all you'd like but if I can't see it I'm not going to get it. :(
If you really what to photocopy stuff for me, things that would be really useful are maps of the urban areas of Rio. Or information on overly indulgent super luxurious hotels (there's gotta be a book about that right? XD) I could likely just Google Map the place but I want a clear indication of what's super ritzy and what's kind of iffy. But also the stuff you mentioned in the Culturegrams section. :D I don't think I need EVERY last detail of the local culture, because none of the characters in the book are native to Brazil. They're all visitors TO the area.... Maybe if you have some info on how the locals truly view tourists or do's and don't's of visiting or how high rolling visitors are treated. Like are there casinos? Are they treated like royalty? Is no request too outrageous? I guess the best equivalent is finding information on how celebrities are treated. Like local and otherwise.
Even if you can't find it all, some of it will surely help! :D
