This week, one of the poem’s we had for another class reading was “A Supermarket in California,” by Allen Ginsberg. In “A Supermarket in California,” Allen Ginsberg creates a picture of a supermarket in Berkeley, California in 1955. Allen Ginsberg also creates allusions of the past poet Walt Whitman strolling around the supermarket. Ginsberg also mentions beliefs from classical mythology that could suggest the thoughts Ginsberg had about America in the past and his reflections on what the American society of that time might have forgotten about nature. This poem made me think about America today and what our society values. There is so much of a hassle from day-to-day in our lives because most of us have to juggle things like family, work, school, friends, and sports. We become so busy that we have to resort to short cuts that make our lives easier. Many of us choose a more simple way of life when we could choose something that would allow us to simply sit back and enjoy what nature has to offer. For example, some of us would choose to watch TV. or get on Facebook instead of going for a walk or going for a bike ride. I think what Allen Ginsberg suggested was to see what nature could have to offer us, which is something most of us, including me, should put into action.
