yay! my internets are back!
So....we moved last week. I'm not sure everyone knew that.
My mom, 2 brothers, and I had been renting a house from some friends of ours who were moving to the midwest for a year. And now they're coming back and want to get that house ready to sell, so we moved to a place that's more our size and my mom can
actually afford.
Of course, I moved my computer and all my other stuff over the weekend (yes, while it was 100*). And comcast couldn't come out to hook up our new internets until today! Well, I had to work at 11, so I figured that I'd come back to nice shiny new internets, right? right?
Yeah, I wouldn't be putting this under a cut if it were that easy...
So, apparently comcast was running a promotion, and the little modem is only $3 a month to rent from them.
Yes, modem. Not modem-thingy. Not modem-router-thingy. Not even wireless modem-thingy...we get to hook up one (1) computer to it at once. :(
And how did we figure this one out? Well, certainly not by reading anything close to an instruction manual. Since my mom's paying for it, we hooked it right into her computer. It works great. There's a hub and a switch in there too to get the internets up to my room and my brother's room and our computers are all hooked in....and no internets!
So, I go down and unplug my mom's computer and reboot the modem....and my little brother gets internets. Of course, at this point I'm like...wtf? o.0
Turns out that the modem is just that - it connects one computer to the comcast line. Good thing I got a netpc from school to load as a FreeBSD router.
Yeah....turns out the fBSD installer won't talk to the modem, so I can't actually install it. It hangs at 'resolving host ftp.freebsd.org...'
And then we ate dinner. Hamburgers ftw. And fake hippy guac...
Back to the internets. My old linux server I'd been using as a router for my room at the old house. So, I plugged that in between the modem and the rest of the network. Everything's cool now.
Oh wait...except I was using that server for my desktop ^^;;
Good thing my laptop is deciding to work today (whether it wanted to or not).
