the waiter mocked me, oh yeah

Stef, Nic and I celebrated Cinco de Mayo in the most culturally-insensitive way an Anthropology and Global Studies major possibly could. I commenced the evening with a presentation of Mexican Material Goods and a speech using all the Spanish I know, which you can (and should) watch here. Since I promise you won't understand a word I said, my presentation speech says, "Buenos tardes. Quien esta Pedro? No los se con gusto. No hablo español. Arroz con pollo un poquito. Soy americano, por favor. Domingo verde lunes azul. Feliz Navidad y Feliz Cinco de Mayo!" (or alternatively, "Good evening. I don't know with pleasure. I don't speak Spanish. Rice with chicken a little. I'm American, please. Sunday green Monday blue. Merry Christmas and Happy Fifth of May!"). Oh, and that's uh, a sombrero made out of newsprint on my head which falls off if I move too much.

I made everybody sombreros out of paper plates and bowls last night. Stef took this photo upside down, so upside it will stay. I also christened everyone with Spanish names, so we are L-R Dónde, Jorges y La Fiesta.

We weren't going to wear Mexican hats into a Spanish restaurant, so we just put them on for the car ride there and back. They kept sliding off our heads, however, so we found more creative ways to wear them.

I also made us fake maracas using containers in the recycling bin, which we shook out the window as we listened to a mix CD of Spanish language songs/songs with the words "Mexico" or "Spanish" in them/one random piece of Brazilian techno entitled Operación: Los Gatos Rojos del Baño.

We ate at Solea, a tapas restaurant in Waltham. It's um, fitting to celebrate Mexican independence at a Spanish restaurant, um, yes. I ordered coffee with dessert, which was of course not sweet enough, so I ended up adding 8 packets of sugar, exactly what Nic despairingly predicted I'd do. I drink tea like this, and it leaves a sugar sludge in the bottom.

The woman next to us offered to take a group photo for us, except she moved the camera too soon, so this is the result.

Is it bad that I find Will & Grace to represent my ideal lifestyle...?
