I am actually going to France. My dictionnaire unilingue arrived in the mail yesterday as a perfectly-timed congratulatory gift. No more nail-biting weeks, wondering how poorly my current French professor recommended me, no more nerve-wracking interviews in French over the phone, no more overly polite, overly composed emails asking if there's anything I can possibly do to enhance my application. I was bracing myself for a semester of solitude, as even my off-campus friends will be abroad next fall. Now, I can switch my daydreams from weekends wandering lost and lonely through Boston to dreams of reading in cafés and taking walks with the barista along the Seine after his shift ends. Occasionally over the past few days, I've forgotten that I'm actually going.
My unexpected acceptance has motivated me to finish the pile of other forms on my desk. I finally convinced my mother that I have to intern sometime, and so I'll be sending out applications on Monday to a few environmental organizations for positions in their fundraising departments. While I recognize that I do not have the necessary background, I'm hoping for a positive response from Northwest Environmental Watch, who advertise the position as unpaid, but with free gelato. However, if I do intern this summer, I'll probably have to work at a second job because I can't afford to let an entire summer's income disappear, especially when living abroad will cost an arm and a leg. How am I going to find time to intern, work, take three dance classes, learn Spanish and hike often?
Lately, I've been appreciating the little things in life more (clichés exist for a reason). I ate store-bought hamentaschen for Purim and homemade soda bread for St. Patrick's Day. At work, I watered live daisies, which are part of a sculpture, and the days are long enough that I can dance around with my elongated shadow on the way home each day. The flowers on my window sill are sprouting, and now I can't wait for spring.
(I wanted to update last night, but Yael came in at 1:30am to practice her step aerobics routine on bra-less me, and who am I to argue?)
