Snowball the parrot wants a cracker before we leave for Greenlake, I guess.

The Milk Carton Derby is a SeaFair event in which groups build boats with milk cartons as flotation devices. This was the military race, and three of the boats ended up crashing into each other.

In this race, the teams had 45 minutes to build a boat on-site. Most of them floated well, but the police team started to sink.

While we missed the decorative float parade, many groups had their boats on shore for display. There were too many people to get good shots of some of the more fantastic ones, including a huge seahorse and a tent with camping stove for the Girl Scouts.

On the sides of Green Lake, many groups had set up tents with free food and merchandise. CathErine and I could not resist the urge to pose with creepy mascot men (I'm telling Mr. Giant Pizza Man from Papa Murphy's that I now eat cheese, and she is hugging the SeaHawk mascot).
Foreign Film Night was bumped to Saturday evening this week, and we watched La Vita è Bella, the story of a Jewish man who tries to provide hope to his family in a concentration camp. By far, it has been the best of the films so far, if not solely from the story that successfully balances whimsical humor and the seriousness of what it has to tell and the moving performance by director and lead actor Roberto Benigni. I did find the numerous implausibilities in the historical accuracy of the story to be distracting, as they kept me from becoming deeply involved in the story, but I suppose they were necessary. What really made the movie for me was watching the section at the end discussing how the film was made and the international reaction to it; Benigni made the movie because he felt it was an important story to tell, so the voluminous praise was completely unexpected. The way in which Benigni carried himself showed that he truly believed the message which he wanted to spread.

My hip scarf and finger cymbals for belly dance arrived last week, and now there is no class this Monday to allow me to practice with them. Boo-hoo.
