Oh dear. I am soooo ill. I mentioned 'a little cough' that I had in France? Yeah it turned into a full-blown chest infection, possibly Bronchitis and I have now been coughing like a consumptive for nearly 4 weeks. It's given me a horrible stabbing pain in my side which we briefly thought might be pleurisy, but the Dr now thinks it's probably just that I've pulled something. Which, alas, sounds far less serious and really doesn't do justice to the ridiculous amount of pain I'm in. Of course as soon as I stop coughing the pain will go too, but this cough really does not seem to want to go anywhere; it's found its host and it's quite happy in me! For the first week or so I tried to see it as time I could legitimately spend lazing about doing nothing but I'm so bored now, I just want it over and done with. At least work have been quite sympathetic though if I don't make it in this weekend I think that might run out. That's the problem with being ill for so long - the sympathy wells start to run dry!
I would have updated sooner but as I've just been one big whinge machine I thought it best not to. But
harmyjo asked me these aaaages ago... well 5 days anyway, and I really thought I'd better get on with answering them!
Leave me a comment with "BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE" in the subject line. I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better. Update your journal with the answers to the questions. Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.
1. If you could swap lives with any fictional character, who would it be?
This is a really hard question! There's loads of books and films I'd love to go into for a bit of escapism, but I don't think I'd really want to live there. Although I do think it would be rather fun to be Emma Peel from The Avengers for a bit. I mean, she was a fashion icon, got to drive round in a Lotus Elan solving crimes and trade witty banter with Steed, what's not to love?
2. What was your favourite film as a child?
Labyrinth! I adored it! The fantasy of it, the hint of romance. I used to know Sarah's lines off by heart and can still trot out the 'You remind me of the babe' bit quite happily. I also remember watching Flight of the Navigator quite a bit. I think I basically enjoyed anything which gave an ordinary child the chance to be extraordinary as I would think it was only a matter time until something incredible happened to me! And my mother has just informed me that she remembers being forced to sit through the Care Bears movies several times with me, so they must have been a fave too!
3. City or countryside? Why?
I've grown up somewhere between the two, in a rather small, suburban town but the answer is definitely city. I am very much of the mindset that the countryside is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there! I do sometimes feel a little overwhelmed in large cities, but the benefits so outweigh the negatives: I love the hustle and bustle, all the little things to discover like shops and pubs and intriguing little side streets. Everything is so much more convenient and I feel more alive when I'm surrounded by noise and haste. Living in Bath has really been the perfect compromise though as it's a small city surrounded by gorgeous countryside, I miss it quite a bit.
4. What did you want to be when you were little?
I went through many stages, including my personal favourite which was wanting to work in a shoe shop! At the age of about 5 that seemed to me to be the height of sophistication! I went through quite a serious stage of wanting to be an actress and did drama classes and auditions and all that. But then I actually got to be in a couple of things and it was all rather boring and people shouted at you, so I went off the idea. Though that was probably the last time I really had a firm idea of what I wanted to be!
5. What is your most treasured possession?
My teddy, imaginatively named Teddy! He was made for me by my great-grandmother who I have no memory of and as my parents didn't want to name him for me he remained simply Teddy. His ears, arms and one leg have been 'loved off' and his eyes have been replaced with buttons so to people who don't understand he looks rather terrifying, but he's definitely the thing I'd save from a burning building.
Here we are approx 26 years ago.
And here we are now, only without my poorly face. I'd like to think I've aged better than poor old Teddy but considering the way my lungs are clattering away I'm not sure that's strictly true!
So, yes, it appears my week will mostly be spent sitting very still and trying not to cough too much. This means I am racing through my supply of Spooks episodes (Ruth! Ros! so awesome!) rather speedily. Cannot wait for series 8 now.
