city life

Yesterday was the last day of the Andrew Wyeth exhibit at the High Museum. I had been wanting to see this because I heard it was good and Dad and I are members of the High so I get in for free. I had been planning to go all weekend, but extenuating circumstances kept me away. So, Sunday came and I knew it was my last chance, but I hadn't gotten much sleep the night before and I didn't have a car at my disposal and I didn't have anyone to go with, not to mention I was kind of depressed and was considering moping around the apartment thinking about things and feeling sorry for myself. Fortunately I felt myself wanting to do that and I rebelled against all odds. I was really lucky because it was sunny outside and a little bit cool, but not cold enough to give me another excuse to stay in, so I gathered my things and walked from the apartment to the Peachtree Center MARTA station (I know 5 Points is closer, but I hate that station). From there it was a straight shot over to the Art's Center station, and once I got there all I had to do was walk across the street and there was the museum! I got my free ticket and spent the next hour and a half wandering around the newly renovated buildings and looking at all the various artworks. I really enjoyed the Wyeth exhibit although it was quite crowded and I just floated around without really giving it the careful attention it deserved. That's really how it was in the whole museum, my old art teachers would have been horrified by my lack of contemplation of all the various pieces throughout the building that I saw with glazed over concentration. But, it was a good experience over all, it was just the distraction I needed and it felt like being in another city. It made me proud of Atlanta for a little while, because those kind of experiences are usually reserved for when I'm on vacation in New York or Boston or Washington DC or Madrid where it is easy to hop on a train and ride to a museum and spend part of the day enjoying the cultural experiences that the city has to offer. That is the other cool thing about living about downtown, I just walked out the door and got on the train and went from downtown to midtown and then rode the train right back to the apartment without any trouble. It made me want to walk to the aquarium from here while I still have a chance because it's not too many blocks away, and if I were in NYC I wouldn't think twice about walking some place like that. Downtown living has been a cool experience, I'm going to miss it. But, I'm glad I got to have an experience like yesterday before I missed my chance. Sometimes it is best just to force yourself to get out and do things.
