Children's laughter fill the air
with a warmth that families share-
As hors d'œuvre are served
and the pianist swerves upon his
seat, his soul replete and smiling.
Glasses clink, wine is swilled about
then it comes sweetly to the mouth.
The sun sends angels down in
fleeting flashes, dancing on the rims
caught in a watching sparrow's wink.
The plump bird ruffles its feathers
hops, and tilts its head to one side,
its world now a slanted plane of
high heels, polished leather soles
and food, glorious food that kids
Let fall on the ground, crumb by
crumb, and the sparrow pecks,
one by one, gleefully; and then,
chirping, it flutters off to an
inviting branch, among the leaves,
That's where it soundly sleeps.
this speaks for itself
