not long after i wrote the last post, i heard some yelling outside. i saw someone screaming towards the back of the building next to our's and decided to go out front to see what was going on. black smoke was flooding out the windows. i ran upstairs to get a fire extinguisher and my phone before running back outside. before i could go into the building, i heard fire trucks coming. i let some firemen into our apartment to get to the roof and when i opened a door in the back, smoke was everywhere. i couldn't stay in long so i went outside and let the firemen do their job. basically, the building next to our's (which is literally attached) had a fire break out on the first floor. the damage to the basement and top floor were minimal (mostly smoke and water related) bu the first floor is ruined. the one person who was there, paul, got burns on his hands/arms after trying to save some animals and wet the place as much as possible with a garden hose. he will be let out of the hospital tomorrow, which is amazing. everyone else was fine. however, over 30 animals were killed. dogs and cats. i knew they had a lot of animals but i had no idea they had that many... it's just terrible. just bags and bags of bodies. our apartment is fine and most of the smoke is gone. we had some people come and now, as emma describes it, there is an ET like partition in our place. lots of plastic and a huge fan thingy in the kitchen to grab whatever is left and clean it out. so we're all sleeping on the far side of the apartment (adam s. and my rooms are in the back) for tonight and possibly the next day or two. it was really just devastating being out there with my neighbors, whom i'm friends with, crying and yelling. it could've been A LOT worse, so we're all grateful for that but ya know... still a shock.
