(...and your other post reminded me I never responded to this one.)

Yep, pretty much the same year -- we emigrated end of September 1989. I had actually had a year of English instruction in Russia, so I knew, like, "cat" and "bat" and "How do you do?" It took my parents a month to arrange for school for me, so I spent that entire month, pretty much, absorbing TV. (And playing with the little plastic peanuts scattered outside, which I'd never seen before and which made excellent furniture for little pretend invisible men. But that is neither here nor there. XP)

Trek wasn't even on my radar when I got into B5, so B5 will always be my baseline for sci-fi shows. I'd forgotten about Majel on B5 (even though I knew that). The one that really triggers the cognitive dissonance for me is Bester/Chekov... consequently, I was very relieved that newTrek!Chekov looked nothing like Walter Koenig.

I've never seen any of the SG's, kind of for the same reason I never tried to watch TOS (or any other Trek) -- I came across episodes channel surfing, and after a couple of minutes they didn't seem to be grabbing me, so, eh. But I adore new!Kirk, so maybe that means SG-1(? or SG:A? -- you can tell I'm clueless about this) is worth some consideration... And, yes, the power dynamics were wonderful.

Gah. I'm so awful about answering comments when I'm busy. Of course, this summer was just awful in general.

Ok, so SG:A is indeed full of awesome - for the first season. It trails off and I stopped watching at the beginning of season 4, because they just really killed of my favorite characters for no reason.
