Because a server/workstation combination doesn't work out that well ('unscheduled downtimes' etcetera) I decided to give the old metal box which sat workless at my mums' a 3rd life. Transferring it by train was some heavy weight lifting, but now the thingie runs nice and quiet in my 'datacenter':
Apperently, the old box, a Pentium 233 MHz CPU with 96 MB RAM, runs all the tasks the 64 bit AMD Athlon did, without any hitch-ups, contrary to my expectations! Though the CPU load 60.50% on average is somewhat high:
Operating System:
Debian 3.1 GNU/Linux + the good ol' 2.4 kernel. The
apt-get feature of Debian is really nice. Apart from the dependency whores.
