more often than not, when i look back on adventures i have, i focus on the negative. moments in which i embarrassed myself, or was rude, or too drunk...i forget the happiness inherent in adventure. of course i don't forget it completely, being drawn back again and again to the road in spite of my failures, so i suppose there is some hope for me. anyway, i wanted to share some effulgent memories from my trips. to remind myself more loudly; to set an alarm for joy!

one of the best parts of the road is having no idea what city you're in, much less what city you've just left. kp had just taken over driving for me, and i rode up front with him to navigate and keep company. it was warm and rainy, which was a new experience for the brits. i turned on the defroster but it did little to clear the screen. the rain poured down harder still, so we pulled over on the shoulder of the highway. marsy and danny were sleeping in the back; sprawled out across seats in angles only master tetris players could concieve; wrapped around boxes of t-shirts and spare tires and straw hats and guitars. we were laughing about something. the conversation turned to ridiculous names for horrific sex moves. i told kp about the spiderman, and kp laughed, slapping danny's knee to wake him and share the spiderman with him. danny found it hysterical and joined in the coversation, describing one animalistic act after the other, and we rolled around in our seats, holding our stomachs and wiping tears from our eyes. we laughed for a good ten minutes straight, just repeating bits of the previous dialogue. we couldn't catch our breaths so of course we lit cigarettes. it all felt so good. it made sense to me, then, that the defroster had no effect. we had a warmth too much for the outside.

west palm beach, florida. i defy my previous paragraph by knowing where i was, for once. it was february, and i had spent the day walking around and visiting a pet festival [yes, Pet-palooza]. we were on the road with the pretty things peepshow, and load in was around 6. the club was posh; very mod, round edges and small lights and everything white. i set up my merch table in a nice little corner, and the show was good. we had a bounty of drink tickets, and so we loaded out quickly and gathered around the bar. we rejoiced at the ability to smoke inside! there was karaoke going on in the back yard, and some strange dance party took over the club. firefly had a bit to drink and we were still getting used to each other, so we talked a lot in the bathroom line. she came out stumbling, and said, "i just need to dance. i'm fine, i just need to dance." i laughed and knew what she meant. later on, after i carried her back to the bus, everyone else decided to hop in the bus and find the nearest walmart to park for the night. tim was wired, and asked if i wanted to stay and do karaoke with him and we'd split a cab to the bus later on. i was wide awake and had a great buzz going, so i agreed. we made friends with a lovely girl named sally, and used up all the drink tickets. i'd never done karaoke before, and tim had chosen a song i wasn't that familiar with, but eventually i got up there with him and sang four non blondes' "what's going on?" and it was hysterical. sally gave us a ride home around four in the morning, and we sang along with the moulin rouge soundtrack the whole way. tim decided to sleep outside in the grass, and that was the first night i was grateful to see my little green vinyl bunk. it was a good night.

i've had a few good nights.
