the drive to Philadelphia was stressful until we hit the highway. david diving into the car in the middle of chinatown was definitely one of my favorite moments. we had jen, david, and max in the backseat; lindsey my co-pilot as always. we made it to philly with time to kill, so i picked up josh from the bus station and found a decent parking spot. the first unitarian church is exactly what it sounds like, and the show was in the basement, which reminded me of shows back home. the set was incredible. the floors were covered in sweat and water. without trying i spun when i danced, and my waltz with sari felt like ice skating. someone pulled the fire alarm, and so we didn't get to hear the encore but it was a wonderful time nonetheless. it was freezing outside, my bangs froze to my forehead until we got in the car. we went to a diner with sari and had a blast. we drove sari home and then headed back to new york. we talked about the process of raising children and it was a really intriguing conversation; it felt good to talk like that. it was a really mellow drive home for me, and we dropped david and jen off at their respective houses and headed back to the oral office; we got home around 6 in the morning.
in the morning, we went grocery shopping and loaded up the cooler with sodas and sandwiches. francisco joined us for this leg of the trip. we picked up max and drove to baltimore. we were about three hours early for the show, so we drove on to annapolis and walked around the city. it was beautiful, as always. we had lunch at acme pub, and the food was absolutely incredible. we drove to baltimore and went to a party at mick's house around the block from the show. danielle made everyone write "talkin' 'bout dicks" on their arms and it was pretty hilarious. at the ottobar, sam wipf got kicked out before inferno for drinking, which made me really sad so i made sure to visit him outside during the set. they played wonderfully, and the crowd was really fun. there were too many couples making out but i danced on my own and had a great time. i had my first real stage dive at baltimore, and i marvelled at the time that had passed. we were supposed to stay at dave contino's place but he told me patrick was going to be there, so we decided to get a hotel room in the city. we found a comfort inn in baltimore and passed out around 3.
i took a bath in the morning after the pitiful continental breakfast, and while i was drying i got a call from david. he was across the city at a bus station, could i come get him? absolutely! i threw on a dress and picked him up. we went back to the hotel room, where everyone was snuggling and absentmindedly packing things. i smoked a joint rolled in bible paper, which was a first. we headed out for richmond, making good time on the highway and laughing the whole time. we had lunch at the venue, strange matter, and the band was at the bar. i gave jack my business card and told him he'd get free coffee for life. he said, "i've just started drinking coffee; it's good stuff." we drove to another neighborhood and checkout some great vintage shops, david got ice cream and i had some amazing coffee. i bought a dress and boots, max got a really nice suit. lindsey bought a super cute wine key but it broke. sad face. we headed over to the venue kind of early, sat through two mediocre openers. i told everyone to "whoop whoop whoop" when the band came on stage, and we got maybe fifty kids to do it. the set was really incredible; they played tarot! david did a front flip off the pa and doug came over to me and said, "and you say he's not boyfriend material, psh!" the show ended early and we started to head back to new york around 11. david was my co-pilot and then max took over, and the ride home was full of good conversation and hand holding. i dropped everyone off at their houses, and we got home around 4, smoked a bowl and went to sleep.
i slept almost all day yesterday.
it felt so good to laugh and dance. it felt wonderful to drive, to see new things, to spend so much time with good friends.
