“Luhan!”

There’s shadows above him before feet land in front of him. Luhan gasps, almost dropping his water bottle into the sand. He looks up, meeting the eyes and the bright grin of Jongin. Luhan shakes his head, twisting the cap to his water bottle on before laughing.

“Must you jump down here every chance you get?”

Luhan smiles as he watches Jongin settle down next to him. His body reclines against the rock wall behind them.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The blond rolls his eyes, shaking his head as he leans his head back. “You just want to show off is all.”

“Well, I did beat you in our race this morning, if you don’t remember.”

Luhan sits up, fist hitting against Jongin’s shoulder. “That was only because Sehun distracted me!”

Jongin smirks, arms crossing over his chest. He tilts his head, eyes looking out into the ocean. “Yeah, whatever you say, Luhan.”

They stay silent as the sun sets in front of them. Blue ocean turns into a deep orange with tints of yellow. Luhan lets out a content sigh, smiling as his feet wiggle against the cooling sand. It makes his body shiver and he gasps when Jongin puts his jacket around his shoulders. They give one another a gentle smile.

Jongin was the first on the island, so he says. When he was just five, he woke up on the shore. He wandered around until he found what now is his guardian. It was she who told him that there was no one else on the island. She was all alone too, with no memories of where she had came from. Slowly, the rest of the residences arrived at the island, one by one.

Luhan’s never believed the story. He always found it hard to believe that Jongin had such a distinct memory of something when he was so young. Even when Jongin’s guardian tells the story, it doesn’t make any difference. Every time he mentions it to Jongin, the other whines and tells him that it’s absolutely true.

Though, Luhan’s story isn’t much different. He was the last to arrive out of the three friends. He woke up in a bed provided by Jongin’s guardian. She smiled and welcomed him to the island. After washing up and getting food in his body, he met Sehun and Jongin. Both were the same height, jet black hair, and beautiful features. All of them welcomed Luhan like a family. And Luhan didn’t question where he was or where he came from, simply because he didn’t remember. It was like the island was his home his whole life. Like he was waking up from a dream in a way.

It was only when Jongin told him about how he came to the island did he start questioning his own time there. But Luhan often chose not to think about it. Even if he did come from another place, Sehun and Jongin had made him feel as though the island had been his home all his life.

There isn’t a gentle breeze like there usually is when Luhan lies against his favorite palm tree. His hair stays pressed against his face, tips slightly damp from his swim not too long ago. He closes his eyes, lips curling up into a small smile when he fully relaxes. The sound of the ocean and the smell of the trees always help calm him down when his body is tense and his mind is racing.

His eyes shoot open when something lands on his chest. He gasps and looks around, eyes locking on the large yellow star on his chest. Luhan scrunches his nose up, sitting up with the star in his hand. “A paopu fruit?”

“Didn’t you say you always wanted one?” Jongin sits down in front of him, legs crossed and elbows resting on his knees. “I got one for us to share.”

Luhan blinks, parting his lips as his cheeks tint a gentle pink. “I-”

“It was Sehun’s idea.” At that, Jongin’s cheeks turn a darker shade of pink than Luhan’s own. “Said we’re always together anyways and to why not make it official.”

It was true, really. Ever since Luhan’s arrival at the island, Jongin spent every day with him. They’re out from when the sun comes up to when it sets and sleep is heavy in their eyes. Jongin had been the one to make sure he was okay the first few weeks after Luhan woke up. He still cares for him the same way, several years later.

“I-” Luhan stutters again, body straightening up. He clears his throat and lets out a gentle laugh. “Yeah,” he says looking up at Jongin. “We’ll remain apart of each other’s lives no matter what, right?”

Jongin nods, gently taking hold of the fruit. “Our destinies will intertwine forever.”

Luhan doesn’t say anything after ripping his side from Jongin’s. He only thinks to himself that maybe, their destinies had already been intertwined. Maybe that’s why Luhan appeared on the island.
