Character

Name: Elena Gilbert
Fandom: The Vampire Diaries (TV series)
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Time Period: Mid/Late 2010 | Directly post episode 2x05 (Kill Or Be Killed)
Wing Color: light plum
History: Link #1; Link #2

Personality: Elena was once a bit of a social butterfly, and even after her summer of reclusiveness is considered one of the more popular girls in her high school. The Salvatore brothers often compare her to Katherine, especially when they're first getting to know her, but despite the obvious physical similarities, they couldn't be more different. She is kind, warm, and caring while Katherine is vicious, selfish, and manipulative. The accident that killed her parents forced her to grow up quickly and she has a more morose and slightly cynical view on things than she used to, but she is still essentially the same girl she's always been, only less carefree and cheerful. She dislikes being lied to and having things kept from her, especially when it's a big secret (like her boyfriend and his brother being vampires, or how she looks exactly like her boyfriend's ex from over a century ago, or how she was adopted right after she was born). She's a very strong believer of the idea that her trust has to be earned before she gives it away.

Despite the insane situations her canon seems to like throwing her into, Elena always maintains a tenuous grip on her sanity and her practical way of thinking towards any given situation. She's selfless and protective, willing to take on pain to prevent those close to her from feeling any themselves (an example of this is when she asks Damon to erase Jeremy's memory of Vicki being killed in front of him, but refuses to have it done herself).

Losing her parents has made her very wary of getting close to anyone new and caused her to push away the friends she already had for a long time, because she was afraid that if she let herself be happy again, something would come along to steal it away, which was a huge part of why she was so reluctant to begin her relationship with Stefan. Despite this fear, she is friendly and generally gets along well with everyone she meets.

Strengths: She doesn't have any sort of supernatural powers, but she is an avid writer and fairly academically inclined - she's not a genius, but she generally seems to do well in her classes. She's also athletic - before the accident, she was an active member of her school's cheerleading squad - and very, very pretty (of course she is, she's a character on a CW show).

It's also worth noting that throughout everything she's lived through thus far (losing her parents, her brother's drug problem, having her view of what is fact and what is fiction turned upside-down, discovering that she's adopted and that her boyfriend, his brother, and her biological mother are vampires, and discovering that she's the doppleganger of her boyfriend and his brother's sire from 1864), she always does what she can to hold onto her sanity and what makes her her. Any one of those things are enough to turn someone into a shell of themselves, but Elena shows a determination to grow from her experiences and take control of her life, rather than letting her experiences define who she is.

Weaknesses: One of Elena's flaws that is the most dangerous to herself and others involves her tendency to turn a blind eye when people she loves do things that are less than...good, for lack of a better word. There are several examples of this, one of the first ones shown being the way she handles her younger brother's drug problem - she says herself "I gave you a summer pass" when she probably should have been nipping the problem in the bud when it first started. Another example is shown in season two when Stefan threatens to turn her biological father if he doesn't leave town - granted, she doesn't see the specifics of what goes down here (Stefan forces John to drink his blood and tells him he'll turn him and watch him hate himself if he doesn't leave town), but this showcases some extremely violent and potentially dangerous behavior, which she's already seen that Stefan is capable of, and she essentially tells him "thank you" instead of discouraging it, which, since Stefan had recently relapsed into drinking human blood again, resulting violent behavior, stealing from a blood bank, and him attacking a human girl, was probably not a great thing to do.

This ties into another one of her flaws: she has a tendency to behave a bit selfishly, to get wrapped up in her own world and emotions, when bad things are going down. She let Jeremy's drug problem slide because she was wrapped up in the grief and guilt of being the only survivor of the car wreck that killed her parents, she's too distracted by her blossoming relationship with Stefan and the drama surrounding that to realize what Damon's doing to Caroline until it's almost too late, and she has Damon take away Jeremy's memories of what happened to his girlfriend Vicki (Damon had turned her out of boredom, Stefan killed her when she went to attack Elena), something that Jeremy is extremely angry to discover later on in the season, because she doesn't want it destroying him. While her intentions with asking Damon to do this were mostly noble, they were also tinged with selfishness - Jeremy is the only link to her old family she has, and she didn't want to risk losing him again.

As far as physical weaknesses go, Elena is athletic and can move fast, but given her build and lack of fighting skills, her capability when it comes to fighting is fairly limited. And because of her stubbornness and willingness to fight to save the people she loves, she's willing to throw herself into dangerous situations without really thinking of the consequences.

All right, I'm not exactly sure how this thing works. I've gathered that you're apparently supposed to communicate through it, though, so...whatever, I'll give it a try.

[ a slight clearing of the throat, and then: ]

Whoever's out there who can hear this, my name is Elena. I don't know how I got here - I just woke up in the middle of the woods and found this book beside me, and I don't know who's responsible for the wings or the nightgown, but it's the middle of winter and I'm freezing, and I could get really sick from being exposed to this kind of weather without a coat or even shoes. [ pause. ] Although you've already kidnapped me and stuck a pair of wings on my back, so I guess my health isn't exactly your biggest concern.

Look, I'm sure you have some reason for bringing me here, but I can't be here. There are things going on at home. I need to make sure my family and friends are okay, and then there's the matter of school and helping set up for the masquerade ball. Can you just...take me back? Please?

Third Person:

Elena's reality feels more and more like an extended dream these days, but she's come to terms with the the fact that the things she grew up believing were fiction were very, very real and becoming a bigger part of her life day by day. But even though she's gotten used to vampires, witches, and more recently, werewolves being real, she's entirely unprepared for what she wakes up to. She's curled up in the middle of the woods, lying on top of a pile of snow. The cold is the first thing she notices, and it confuses her - wasn't it much warmer the day before, even after night fell? It shocks her awake, and she sits up with a start, wrapping her arms tightly around herself.

The second thing she notices is that she's dressed in some sort of nightgown that's totally inappropriate for the weather, and the third is the uncomfortable new weight on her back, near her shoulder blades. The cold heightens her discomfort - her head and neck and joints ache, and the pressure on her back makes it difficult to stand. She braces herself with a hand on a nearby tree as she gets to her feet, resting there for a moment and closing her eyes as she brings her opposite hand to the back of her neck to rub at the tense muscles there - and her eyes snap back open when she feels what's weighing her down.

Feathers.

She feels around frantically, and yes, she does have wings on her back. Oh God. How did this happen? What does this make her? She can't remember hearing about any sort of mythological being with wings, unless...

Oh, God.

"Am I dead?" she asks, in a frightened, timid voice.

No. No, it can't be. She'd been with Stefan, who'd always promised to keep her safe, especially since Katherine had arrived back on the scene, and while she knew Katherine was more than capable of killing her without disturbing the peace of the house at night, Stefan would never have let it happen when he was with her.

So what the hell has happened to her?

"Hello?" she calls out, hoping that she's not the only one out here. Even if the only other person is whoever did this to her, at least maybe she'll get some answers about what's happened to her and why they've done this. "Is there anyone here?"
