Six More Interests Meme

Nov 09, 2007 01:19

I've been called upon to do this Meme again, this time with interests selected by Potato Junkie.

They are:

1. AltNation
2. Business
3. Glasgow
4. Films
5. Table Tennis
6. The internet

As with before, if anyone wants me to select six for them then they can ask and I'll obey. So, here goes.

1. AltNation

As I said in the last post, I moved to Glasgow for uni and discovered a nightclub (the Cathouse) and it's forum (AltNation). I didn't have a social life before...ever. Now I have one. And this site has given me it.

It's very easy to criticise the place, and definitely for someone in my position. But on the whole,  don't. Perhaps it's idealism, but I really do believe it's a good place with good people. Because it has given me a social life I'll forever be grateful. There's a lot of bitching on the place, a lot of snidey bastards being horrible to each other, and certain people who find themselves designated "acceptable" are targeted in particular. Myself and Ali are both in that category, I firmly believe. Yet there are still good people! People like Rach, Ali and Fiona provide proof that not everyone there is bad - you just sometimes have to look beyond the obvious *not with them specifically*

It's a very interesting place sociologically actually - we're all in roughly the same area, know each other in many cases offline, and by looking through many posts you can see how we and our relationships have changed over the years. Hell in a few years time a comparison of the honesty threads would make a very interesting study - seeing how people change their views of others. I mean, I've got a good idea of how people have changed their views of me - generally from negative to positive as I've matured - but obviously I couldn't speak for the others. But I'd like to see it done actually. If the site is still going in a decade, you could see a fascinating blur of online and offline culture and relationships like no other.

2. Business

My chosen profession. I've been interested for years, ever since I saw my dad checking his shareprices and I asked about it. When I was 16 I started asking for shares for Christmas presents. I've never done much with them, though I still have them and still get the odd check for a couple of quid. When I can be bothered, I'll get serious about investing. Money makes the world go round - and Capitalism makes the money. We can't escape it, even if we try. The only serious Communist countries left are corrupt dictatorships, and even China is turning Capitalist in order to boost it's economy.

Criticise them all you like - corporations aren't going anywhere, my friend.

3. Glasgow

My adopted city. I've been living between here and Dumfries for 3 years, and now finally only live here. I plan to stay in the Central belt for career/social reasons for some time to come, although how long that lasts I don't know.

I'd always been told it was a really friendly city, but it's a city like any other really. There's definitely a lot of friendly people about, although there's also a lot of, without meaning to sound condescending, scum. I live next door to the Court, so every morning I'm woken up by jaikies screaming at each other outside the witness entrance and the vans transporting them there.

It seems a weird combination of the most opportunistic city I've ever seen and the epicentre of the Abyss, which seems to be in the process of claiming a large number of it's citizens.

4. Films

I have a reasonably wide interest in films. My favourite, with which I'm obsessed, is Battle Royale. Second is Leon, and third is Baseketball.

I like a lot of stuff, including various types of action thriller - political, historical, sci-fi, various types of comedy - teen, screwball, black, even some rom-coms like Hitch.

Basically depending on my mood I can watch virtually anything except Noir, Bollywood, a lot of rom coms, and period dramas (that doesn't include historical epics like Last Samurai or Gladiator, which I love).

Films are fantastic really. It's too late and I'm too tired to say more really.

5. Table Tennis

My main "extra curricular" within uni - I basically run the uni's club. It's an interesting game. As with everything else in life, I don't play conventionally - I've a lethal sidespin, with which I specialise, and have done my ankle in on a number of occasions flying about the table. There's a lot of skill involved, it's by no means an easy game! It is a lot of fun however, and I'd like to see it become bigger in this country.

6. The internet

The other part of the reason I have a social life today, but also the bain of my existence due to my addiction to it, and computers generally. I coped fine during the pleasant extended period without it in my new flat though, which was good because I could gladly go without in future, except for uni work. This makes me happy, and also makes me feel like I've regained control over at least some small aspect of my life.

I'm too tired to write more than this tonight, I'm afraid.
