IC:

Character name: Peregrin “Pippin” Took
Fandom: Lord of the Rings (movies, though using some dates from the books)
Timeline: Return of the King. After the retreat of Osgiliath and meeting Faramir and before Pippin takes his vows as a Guard of the Citadel.
Age: 30 (estimating since the movies really never state it)
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
An insatiable appetite?

In the world at large, Hobbits are fairly unremarkable. Aging slightly slower than Man, at the age of 30 Pippin is actually still too young to be considered an adult. Hobbits are skilled listeners, have very good eyesight, and quite deft hands. Though the deftness of his hands usually lends itself to pranks.

Pippin has some skill with a blade, learning alongside Merry while on their journey, but he is far from a skilled warrior. He knows as much combat as needed to protect himself.

How would they use their abilities?: Being of a rather peaceful race, Pippin isn’t one to fight for pleasure. But he will protect his friends if ever stirred. His talents tend to run in making trouble, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not.

Appearance:
A bit taller than the average Hobbit (thanks to a spring in Fangorn Forrest), to any onlooker Pippin would seem a child at first glance. A Hobbit late in his Tweens, Pippin has a very youthful face, along with curly blonde hair, almost golden in color, and blueish-green eyes, appearing even younger than he actually is. He has yet to grow into a plump figure, possibly being the skinniest of his friends. Expect a smile on his face whenever you happen to see him.

As proper of a Hobbit, Pippin also has slightly pointed ears and furry feet with leathery soles. This is why he, and most other Hobbits, tends to not wear shoes.

Background:
Before we can get into Pippin proper, we should probably shortly address the story at large since it does come to affect him later.

In the Second Age of Middle Earth, the Dark Lord Sauron forged the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom in order to conquer the lands of Middle Earth. A Last Alliance of Elves and Men formed and marched on the lands of Mordor as a last effort to force back Sauron’s legion. At the foot of Mount Doom, Prince Isildur, son of King Elendil, who was slain by Sauron in the battle, picked up his father’s broken sword, Narsil, and slashed at Sauron’s hand, separating him from the Ring and vanquishing his army. However, since the Ring was bound to his life-force, Sauron could only be truly killed by destroying the Ring with the same fires it was forged in. The Elf Lord of Rivendell, Elrond, led Isildur into Mount Doom and instructed the Prince to throw the Ring into the volcano. However, the Ring’s power was great and the will of was Men weak. An already corrupted Isildur refused Elrond’s demand and took the Ring as his own. Sometime later, Isildur was ambushed and killed by Orcs, the Ring falling into a nearby river and lost there for 2500 years, until the Third Age, year 2463. The Ring was then found by a Stoorish Hobbit by the name of Déagol, who was fishing with his cousin Sméagol. The Ring easily corrupted the two Hobbits, forcing Sméagol to strangle his cousin to death. Banished by his people, Sméagol fled to the Misty Mountains and spent the next four hundred years alone in the caves with his “Precious,” becoming the creature known as Gollum due to a split in his personality. The Ring then abandoned Gollum, found now by Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit from the Shire. Bilbo then kept possession of the Ring for sixty years, to be then passed onto his nephew, Frodo Baggins.

Now we can get to a point where Pippin can be involved in his own backstory.

Peregrin Took, born Third Age 2990, was the youngest child of four, his siblings being his sisters Pearl, Pimpernel, and Pervinca. His parents were Paladin Took II, Thain of the Shire, and Eglantine Banks. Being of the Took clan, Pippin led a relatively comfortable life without need of tending to fields or any sort of occupation for that matter. Though eight year younger, Pippin became best friends with his first cousin Meriadoc Brandybuck, Merry for short. In fact, the two were nearly inseparable, infamous the Shire over for their pranks. Pippin was also a friend to his second cousin, Frodo Baggins, though the two were not particularly close.

As the story begins, Merry and Pippin were in attendance of Bilbo’s 111th birthday party, making trouble for the wizard Gandalf the Grey by stealing one of his fireworks and nearly setting fire to the entire party. Their harmless prank did cost the two, forced to clean dishes for the rest of the night. This was also the night Bilbo left the Shire for Rivendell, leaving Bag End and the Ring to Frodo. Gandalf also left that night for Minas Tirith, seeking knowledge of the Ring after seeing how it drove Bilbo somewhat mad. Times were peaceful as always in the Shire while Gandalf was away, but that peace was soon coming to an end.

After conserving his strength for thousands of years, Sauron was beginning to make his move on Middle Earth once more. He sent his forces in search of the One Ring.

Gandalf, after discovering Bilbo’s Ring was actually the Ring of legend, returned to the Shire and instructed Frodo to leave the Shire immediately for Rivendell. Catching Samwise Gamgee eavesdropping, Gandalf sends him as well to protect Frodo while he went to Isengard for Saruman the White’s council. While traveling to Bree, Frodo and Sam had a chance run-into with Merry and Pippin, who were stealing from Farmer Maggot’s crops. After an encounter with a Nazgul, one of Sauron’s many creatures, Merry and Pippin were roped into helping Frodo and Sam reach Bree, where the Hobbits were supposed to meet with Gandalf. Upon reaching the Inn of the Prancing Pony, the Hobbits discovered Gandalf hadn’t arrived, and decided to spend the night waiting on the Wizard. After a small mishappening in the tavern, the Hobbits met a Ranger from the North by the name of Strider, who was a friend of Gandalf and agreed to help the Hobbits reach Rivendell. The group continued on their travels, spending a night on the hill of Weathertop. Strider was away on survey when the Hobbits were attacked by the Nazgul. One managed to stab Frodo with a poisoned morgul blade before Strider managed to drive them off. Trying to treat Frodo, the group was then found by the Elf Arwen, daughter of Elrond, who took Frodo on ahead before he succumbed to the poison. Strider, Sam, Merry, and Pippin eventually made it to Rivendell themselves some time after Frodo and Arwen.

While Frodo was recovering, Elrond called a council of Men, Elves, and Dwarves to decide what was to be done about the Ring. It had to be taken into Mordor, past the blackened lands to Mount Doom, where it could be destroyed once and for all. After a heated argument between representatives of the three races, Frodo, a mere Hobbit, volunteered to take the ring. It was agreed that Frodo would be the ring-bearer, and representatives of each race took a place as Frodo’s protectors: Gandalf of course, Strider, now revealed as Aragorn, the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor, the Elf Prince Legolas, the Dwarf Gimli, and Boromir, the son of the Steward of Gondor. Eavesdropping on the council, Sam, Merry, and Pippin also volunteered to join Frodo, thus making nine companions in the Fellowship of the Ring.

The Fellowship set out and tried to pass the mountain Caradhras, but they were soon stopped by Saruman’s magic causing a powerful snowstorm on the mountain. At Gimli’s insistence and against Gandalf’s protests, they decided to seek safe passage under the mountain through The Mines of Moria. However, the Dwarves who lived in the Mines had long since been whipped out by a mass army of Goblins and Cave Trolls. Treading carefully, the Fellowship came to the chamber of Records and Balin’s Tomb. And Pippin happened. Simply put, while looking at skeleton, Pippin accidentally knocked it into a well, causing the noise to resonate throughout the entire mine and alerting the Goblins to their presence. While fleeing from the mine, they encountered a Balrog, an ancient demon of fire and shadow, at the Bridge of Khazad-dum. Having the others escape, Gandalf confronted the demon and collapsed the bridge, but was dragged down into the abyss below. The Fellowship, now less one member, fled to the Elven realm Lothlórien seeking safe shelter. The rulers of the realm, Galadriel and Celeborn, gave each member an Elven Cloak that would hide them from unfriendly eyes and separate gift. Merry and Pippin were both presented with daggers, Galadriel telling Pippin that he will find his courage. Taking the straight path to Mordor, the Fellowship traveled the River Anduin towards Parth Galen.

Arriving there, this is where things turned really bad.

While the members split off, Merry and Pippin looking for food, Boromir tried to take the Ring from Frodo. He managed to escape, and after an encounter with Aragorn, Frodo decided the temptation of the Ring was too great for the Fellowship and left them to go to Mordor alone. The rest of the Fellowship was then attacked by a party of Uruk-hai, an advanced breed of orcs created by Saruman that were ordered to track down the Fellowship and capture the Hobbit bearing the Ring. Merry and Pippin realized Frodo was leaving, and distracted the orcs so that Frodo could get to the boat and escape. Boromir rushed in to help the two Hobbits, but was mortally wounded by the Uruk-hai commander. Merry and Pippin were then grabbed by the orcs and taken prisoner.

What remained of the Fellowship was then broken into three paths: Frodo and Sam headed for Mordor, Merry and Pippin were captured and being taken to Isengard, and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were tracking the orcs that took Merry and Pippin.

While held captive, their luck had changed when the Hobbits overheard that that the orcs smelled a tracking party heading their way. Hopeful, Pippin managed to pull off the elven brooch of Lórien from his cloak and threw it on the ground as a sign to the tracking party. The orcs finally stopped for the night, right along the edge of Fangorn Forrest, where they were ambushed by a small army led by the recently banished Rohan commander Éomer. Merry and Pippin were able to escape into the forest, though hunted down by a hungry orc. The two were saved by the Ent (tree-like creature) Treebeard, who, thinking they were orc spies, took them to see the “White Wizard.” Thinking they were being taken to Saruman, the two were shocked to see that it was actually Gandalf, reborn as Gandalf the White. Gandalf instructed the two Hobbits to stay with Treebeard, and a council of Ents was called. When it was decided that the Ents would not join in this war, Treebeard offered to take Merry and Pippin north toward the Shire. However, Pippin then instructed Treebeard to head south passed Isengard, reasoning the closer they were to enemy lines, the less likely they were to be caught, when in actuality he wanted to show the kind of destruction Saruman was capable of. Angered by the deforestation surrounding Isengard, Treebeard summoned the other Ents and laid assault on Isengard. With most of its army gone in attack of Helms Deep, Saruman was left mostly defenseless as the Ents flooded the keep and claimed Isengard.

Merry and Pippin were then left to watch the gates of Isengard and await the arrival of Théoden, King of Rohan, as well as Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Éomer. They were then taken to confront Saruman, who was killed by his accomplice Gríma Wormtongue. As his body fell from the keep, the Palantír of Orthrac, a seeing stone directly connected to the Eye of Sauron, fell from Saruman’s robes, only to be found by Pippin. The magic from the seeing stone held a sway over Pippin, even after handing it over to Gandalf. The group then rode for Edoras, where they celebrated their victories with song and feast. Merry and Pippin especially so, as the two got drunk and danced a Hobbit’s jig on one of the tables in front of a large crowd of Rohan men. However, Pippin paused for just a moment and saw that Gandalf was watching him, but he is quickly pulled back into the dance.

Later that night, Pippin was unable to sleep, still under the spell from the seeing stone. He stole the seeing stone from a sleeping Gandalf, despite Merry’s urgings to leave it alone, and touched it. While gazing into the seeing stone, Pippin was suddenly spied on by the Eye of Sauron, and through a psychic link, the dark lord attempted to interrogate Pippin. Only barely able to resist Sauron’s power, Pippin was saved from revealing anything by Aragorn and Gandalf pulling the seeing stone from Pippin’s fingers. Though shaken, Pippin was able to tell Gandalf what the Eye showed him: a White Tree, in a courtyard of stone, dead while its surroundings burned. Gandalf now knew Sauron was poised to attack Minas Tirith, the capital city of Gondor.

The next morning, the Fellowship met with Théoden in the great hall to decide what was to be done in accordance to Pippin’s vision. Having linked to Pippin, Gandalf was certain the dark lord would come after Pippin, thinking he had the Ring. They pleaded with Theoden to send the Rohirin army to Gondor's defense, to which Theoden refused, believing if Gonder were truly in peril, they would light the beacons and signal them. It was then decided that Gandalf would take the Hobbit to Minas Tirith, to warn the Steward of Gondor, Denethor, and to get Pippin out of Rohan. In the stables, just before they set off, Merry revealed to Pippin that he wasn’t going with him and Gandalf. Pippin, clearly upset, tried to protest as he and Gandalf rode off.

After a three days journey, Gandalf and Pippin reached Minas Tirith, the City of Kings. They rode up through the levels of the city, from the first up to the seventh, until they reached the citadel of the city. Upon entering the Throne room hall, Pippin noticed the White Tree he had seen in his vision guarded by the Fountain Guards and Gandalf explained that the Gondorians believed that one day the White Tree would flower again, once a King returned to the throne of Men. He also warned Pippin not to say anything in the presence of the Steward, especially anything about the death of his son Boromir or the fact that Aragorn was returning to the throne or anything about Frodo and the Ring. So he was just supposed to shut the hell up.

Gandalf and Pippin went to confront Lord Denethor, discovering that Denethor had been nearly driven mad by grief by the death of Boromir and refused to ask for help in the defense of Gondor from Théoden and the Riders of Rohan. Speaking up, against Gandalf’s prior instructions, Pippin volunteered for service to repay Denethor for the death of Boromir, who had died trying to defend him and Merry. Denethor accepted Pippin’s word and sends the two away. Gandalf stormed off, furious that Denethor would not call for Rohan’s aid and that he would just sit in his grief while Mordor prepared to crush Gondor. He then instructed Pippin to light the beacons that would signal Rohan to arms. Though upsetting Denethor, Gandalf knew this would bring hope to the rest of Gondor.

After the retreat of Osgiliath, while riding into Minas Tirith, the commander of the guard at Osgiliath and Denethor’s second son, Faramir, spotted Gandalf and Pippin, looking at the Hobbit as though he wasn’t the first Hobbit to cross his path. He then revealed that he had recently seen two other Hobbits: Frodo and Sam, knowing full well that Frodo possessed the Ring. However, Denethor hears of this too and confronts his younger son in the presence of Gandalf and Pippin.

Personality:

Pippin is a Hobbit of the Took clan through and through. He has the love of food, ale, smoking of pipe weed, parties, and singing that most all Hobbits exhibit. The Tooks tend to be notorious for their unusual behavior, motormouths, and adventurous tendencies, Pippin being a prime example. Foolhardy in nature, Pippin tends to be a bit thoughtless and bites off more than he can chew at times.

“He’s always followed me. Everywhere I went. Since before we were tweens. I would get him into the worst sort of trouble, but I was always there to get him out.” - Merry

Pippin, possibly due to being the youngest, is the Hobbit filled with the most cheerfulness. Yes, he does get himself into bad situations, and he is prone to setting pranks. But they are never done in malice or ill-intentions. At most he does it with Merry, and it’s all for fun.

There’s a sense of optimism when he talks of his friends and of the Shire, as though this journey isn’t as hard on him as most of the others. It’s this optimism that ends up encouraging most he talks to, once they get around his rather foolish nature. He is in no way the smartest of Hobbits, but there are his moments of genius here and there as exampled in Fangorn when he directed Treebeard south. He is loyal and friendly, and will never abandon those he cares for.

“I don't want to be in a battle, but waiting on the edge of one I can't escape is even worse.” -Pippin

But optimism and rash action can only get one so far. When left to quietly contemplate alone, Pippin feels his role in the greater world is much smaller. He’s a Hobbit, not even an adult Hobbit at that, that came on this journey not for fame or greatness, but to help his friends. He has never been in a war or known friends that have died right in front of him. In fact, he only joined the Guard of the Citadel to make amends for his role in Boromir’s death.

With Merry, Pippin can put on a brave face and enjoy himself, but having to leave him behind was likely one of the hardest thing he had done. From then on, its all the more apparent he merely smiles to keep others from worrying about him.

1st person sample:

I’m not quite sure what you Big Folks like to do with your free time, but I much prefer a fish in my stomach and not my ear. Especially with a hot plate of spiced chips and a large mug of beer to keep it company. Seems like a far more reasonable thing to do than sticking it in places it has not right being stuck. A bit of a fair warning might’ve been nice to have, that’s all.

Usually when I’m dreaming, it’s nothing like this. Being stuck signing papers for some rather unfriendly looking folks and then being told home is long gone, doesn’t seem the first of many things I would think up. I honestly have no idea where a dream like this comes from. Rather a bleak one, isn’t it? No, if I’m to be dreaming at a time like this, I’d be dreaming of being back home in the Shire, kicking up my feet at the Green Dragon after a hard day’s work, all in the company of good friends. With a nice full barrel of old Toby to smoke.

You know, this would be about the point where Gandalf would be waking me up, possibly to yell at me to stop dreaming up the weirdest of things. Because that’s all this is right, just some nasty dream? I’ll wake up tomorrow and everything’ll be back to the way it was. Might not’ve be the best of times, but still better than thinking that there's nothing left now.

3rd person sample:

The early morning sun was only barely visible through the thickness that was Fangorn Forrest. Yet that one speck of light was all that it took to stir this Took Hobbit from his heavy sleep. One would think after so many nights away from a proper bed would make sleeping on rocks and tree roots the norm, yet Pippin was waking up this early with the worst of sores. Yawning only a small part of his sleepiness away, Pippin glanced over at Merry. He was still deeply asleep, something that confused Pippin quite a bit, yet far be it for him to disturb his friend.

Standing up, Pippin looked around a bit at the small clearing, just now taking a notice of where he and Merry had spent their night. He was so tired and it was so dark, Pippin never got a good idea of where they were. Treebeard wasn't here, that much Pippin could see. Wonder where he went, but then again Pippin can't really claim to know the business of trees and what they do so early in the morning. The sound of a small spring immediately caught the Hobbit's attention. He was quite parched now that he thought of it, and a spring in a forest wasn't likely any different from a spring anywhere else.  Taking up what looked like a carved out bowl along the roots of a nearby tree, Pippin had himself a nice refreshing drink of water and waited on Merry to wake up.
