Pliny vs. the Begman Embassy. Pliny wins.
Four men in brightly colored Pathi robes, red, blue, green, and brown are walking across the street from the embassy. This is not an unusual sight since Pathi's embassy reopened. The men stop, apparently absorbed in conversation.
There is just a bureaucrat currently assigned to the Amber desk in the Begman Embassy these days, in the absence of a formally appointed Ambassador. But that does not mean the Embassy is empty. Clerks scramble out from behind their desks. One goes to get the acting Ambassador while another one intercepts the men in the Pathi robes. "Er... yes... excuse me..." the clerk says. "Can I help you?"
The man in the blue robes raises one arm, and points to the clerk. He hisses something. It sounds malevolent. There is a popping noise as the air around the man vanishes into nonexistence, leaving him in a temporary vacuum.
There is a moment of complete and absolute silence. And then, bedlam as the clerks panic. Papers go everywhere.
The man in the red robe does something similar. The papers catch fire. The man in the brown does something that makes the floor crack. And the one in green is chanting as well, but nothing obvious is happening.
Foom. The papers catch fire. The flames dance on the wooden desk and bits of flaming this and that end up on the floor. Finally, a Begman bureaucrat comes out of the Ambassador's office as all the clerks are running around trying to put out flames, grabbing fire extinguishers, running for their lives, running for the basement, or pulling weapons. The bureaucrat says, "I SAY."
The bureaucrat is met by a trio of black, fiery snakes that grow out of the floor.
The bureaucrat says, louder, "I SAY." At this time, two enterprising clerks have struggled weapons out. One has a clockwork rapier. The other has a highly illegal pop-gun which he levels at the mage in brown and pulls the trigger. An air-backed projectile shoots out with a loud *POP*.
This is the queue for the blue mage again. The projectile falls to the floor. The brown mage continues to work on making the floor crack. The snakes try to bite people's feet.
The clerk with the rapier leaps over a desk and attacks the brown mage. The clerk with the pop gun drops his pop gun and starts running for the basement. Meanwhile, the flames begin to lick higher up the walls of the embassy foyer and most clerks run out the door. The bureaucrat tries to get loose from the snakes and yells, "I am the Acting Ambassador from Begma! I demand you leave these premises at once!"
The mages don't seem to have a particular defense against rapiers. It goes into the brown mage's robe with a squelch. Black, tainted blood leaks from the wound... and then it begins to squirm, and move on its own. The floor stops cracking, and the brown mage seems to shrivel, as more and more of the liquid leaks out, and forms itself into some kind of liquid tainted Chaos creature. In the meantime, the fiery snakes make a strong effort to burn the acting ambassador up.
The Acting Ambassador to Begma turns out to be extremely flammable. He screams as he burns. The one clerk with the rapier tries, valiantly, to defend the Embassy with his clockwork rapier against... the horrors of Chaos. Meanwhile, the machines in the basement all whirr to life, sending out encoded messages out to waiting Begman ships as fast as those messages can go. They make horrible clacking noises. The Embassy is still, in fact, on fire.
The blue mage and the Chaos blob focus on the only remaining threat in the room. Nasty black ick and lack of air assault him. The red mage focuses on burning things, and the green mage keeps chanting.. though now it seems he might be controlling the goo monster.
Outside, the bells are ringing and Amber City's fire brigade is already on its way. This is the Upper City, services actually work, and there is no way that the fire brigade will allow an embassy to completely burn to the ground. Meanwhile, the Acting Ambassador dies horribly, the clerk from the basement attempts to escape, and the clerk with the rapier is hit with black ice and dies horribly.
The mages seem content to wreak as much property damage as possible in the time available to them
The clerk from the basement, who sent the message, gets up the stairs and takes a shot at the mage in green with a big rifle-like popper from the Embassy weapon stores. In another room, a huge model of the University Tower burns. Meanwhile, the bells are going off outside and the wagons are moments away.
The mages either weren't expecting more resistance, or are too focused on destruction, or don't care. In any case, the mage in green goes down, which causes the goo monster to collapse into a horrible black puddle... the red and blue mages deliberately step into it.
The clerk pops off more shots at the mages. POP! POP POP! Air gun pellets fly. The entire Embassy is rapidly filling with flames and black, acrid smoke. Voices of people yelling are outside and loud enough to be heard within.
Something happens. The two suriving mages are surrounded by smoke and simply... vanish, though one of them may have taken another rifle shot.
At that moment, the fire brigade arrives and water starts spraying all over the building. Men dressed in Crown livery start breaking down the door and the windows to get in and get survivors out. Not that there are many survivors.
When all is clear and said and done, there is a nasty black spot in the middle of the floor, large enough for two people to stand in, that won't come out, no matter how hard it is scrubbed. People may have seen something similar down by the docks.
