Disclaimer: I do not own Grey's, the characters, Moulin Rouge, or the song Elephant Love Medley. This is just for pure amusement.
Author's Note: Usually I don't like songfics much, but this just popped into my head and needed to be written. While reading, it's best to listen to: "Elephant Love Medley " of the movie Moulin Rouge. You can find it on YouTube.
The fic isn't beta'd (sorry!), so all mistakes are mine!
It had been two weeks since Arizona gave me the key to her apartment. There is nothing I’d rather do than watching her cook a meal or sitting with her on the couch watching television after a long shift at the hospital. Those moments had become rare in the past two months. With my extra shifts in the ER and our shifts never ending simultaneously we only had a few times a week together. Today was one of those times. Her shift ended at lunch time and Mark took over the last hour of my twelve-hour shift in the ER.
I look at the key again and my lips curl into a smile. Standing in front of her door, I hear the muffled sound of a song playing pretty loud behind the green door. She’s pretty lucky she doesn’t have to share the apartment and that her neighbors are nearly deaf. When I open the door, I can hear the words of the song more clearly and I recognize the lyrics. A song from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Somehow I’m not surprised.
"Just one night, just one night," I hear her sing together with Christian, the English writer. What’s his name again? Right, Ewan McGregor. "There’s no way, ‘cause you can’t pay." I quietly chuckle at the change of her voice with the character. Singing a duet solo. I walk towards her bedroom, the place where her voice seems to be coming from. "In the name of love, one night in the name of love!"
My smile turns into a grin when I see her stand in front of the mirror, looking at herself sing along and making dramatic facial expressions. "You crazy fool, I won’t give into you." She turns away from the mirror, walking towards her closet. "Don’t leave me this way. I can’t survive, without your sweet love, oh baby, don’t leave me this way." You’d guess she would’ve seen me by now, but she turns her back to me. Nothing indicates that she has seen me so far.
"You think that people would’ve had enough of silly love songs..." she quietly mutters together with Nicole Kidman.
I decide to sing along with Ewan McGregor’s part, to let her know I’m standing in the doorway. "I look around me, and I see it isn’t so," I sing and she turns around immediately. "Oh no," I add to it, smiling. Her eyes grow wide and her cheeks are getting a pinkish color.
"Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs," she mumbles, not sure to stop or continue singing.
"Well, what’s wrong with that?" I sing encouraging, "I’d like to know." I walk towards her, taking off my leather jacket. "’Cause here I go again." She looks surprised when I pull her towards me. "Love lifts us up where we belong. Where the eagles fly, on a mountain high."
"Love makes us act like we are fools," she sings with a large smile on her face, making her dimples appear. "Throw our lives away, for one happy day."
"We could be heroes, just for one day," I tuck a string of her golden hair behind her hair as I sing.
She puts on a strict face and walks towards the other side of the room . "You, you will be mean," she sings while pointing her finger at me.
"No, I won’t," I say with a chuckle, laughing at her facial expression and pointy finger.
"And I, I.. I’ll drink all the time," she replies with rolling eyes and a dramatic sigh.
"We should be lovers!"
"We can’t do that," she retorts with the same stern face.
"We should be lovers, and that’s a fact," I try again and she smiles at me.
"Though nothing will keep us together," she walks towards me again.
"We could steal time," I stretch out my arms and take her hands in my own. "Just for one day," she starts to sing with me. "We can be heroes, forever and ever. We can be heroes, forever and ever. We can be heroes," now the hard solo parts are coming up. Ewan McGregor’s meets Dolly Parton. "Just because I, and I will always love you..."
She looks at me with big blue eyes. "I.. and I.." I take a deep breath and put my arms around the small of her back. Together we sing the end of the sentence. "..can’t help loving you."
I feel her arms around my neck as she sings the last part. "How wonderful life is.. now you’re in the world."
I lean in as we hear the operatic voice of a man closing the song. As our lips meet, I can’t help thinking of that one returning sentence in Moulin Rouge that kept me fascinated for many years. Now, for the first time, I really understand the meaning of it and I can’t help thinking how true it is.
The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is to love and be loved in return.
