On Writing and Creating in General... I Baked A Cake

It seems that in SHINee fandom there's been a little ripple of drama or debate about "constructive" criticism and writing and art and so on.

Let me just say that, yes, I believe that a writer should attempt to maintain a decent capacity for spelling, grammar, sentence structure and the like. Given that a lot of fan fiction is written, for whatever ( Read more... )

letters to the world, essay, look at me being all writerly, rant, i am good job, why is fic so complicated

You summed it all up in your final words. But I being of speedy posting and less than mentaly sound(sleep depraved when posting) am notorious for bad spelling, grammar and down right what-th-fuckery-did-she-mean-by-that moments. Sigh. Beta is my friend. Beta is busy.

Despite all that... or perhaps because of it... your stories are awesomesauce, unnie! I've read a lot of things that had perfect grammar and absolutely no story. You've got stories, and that's the most important thing to being a writer!

She does! Because it's her damned cake *g* No seriously, it's got specialness, heart... story, whatever word you want to use to describe that indefinable something that makes us clamor for more more more :0

I'm a compulsive editor. I notice stuff like that but then I also tend to feel that to some extent that stuff just isn't that important. I'm interested in the story. I am captured by the specialness. My brain often just self replaces the word as I'm going along... I think that's why often when I try to edit *myself* I miss the boat because I'm doing the replace on myself in my head.

I know this was long and rambly... I am the queen of long and rambly mayhaps... but the point still is there, right, right.

*also, squidges to you both*

I even used my happy onew icon on this comment but i guess it does sound kind of down on myself. I didn't mean for it to. I was just admitting my faults (which are many, especially in the ways of typos and grammar).

Thank you for this vote of confidence though :)

but your stories are so awesome that if there are errors, who notices and if I do notice, I don't care because I am so into the story.

what's more important. A great story or perfect grammar and spelling?

Answer: The Great Story! :)

I totally agree. I'm not really that critical of a reader per se and I have read and enjoyed quite a number of fics that *some* folks might have thought needed a lot of red pen. I was too busy being engrossed in the story to care. I'm much much much...*much* more critical of myself than I ever could be of anyone else.

Sweetie pie. There are many of us, myself among them, who appreciate the fact that you can be speedy and who are almost always more engrossed in the story you have to tell (and that cake is nummy too :D) than the fact you might have a typo or what have you.

On another note, just asking, are you okay? Kinda worried about ya.
