~~*~~*~~*~~
After an incredibly long and tiring day at the studio Demi Lovato wanted nothing more than to go home and climb into her warm bed where she could pretend that she would never have to wake up. However, no one else seemed to agree with this plan as the traffic on the expressway seemed to be getting even more backed up as time went on Demi sighed as she banged her head into her steering wheel.
“This day couldn’t get any worse,” Demi muttered angrily.
Demi sighed and she switched on the radio hoping she’d find a good song that would be able to calm her frayed nerves. The very familiar voice of Hayley Williams, lead singer of Paramore, drifted up to Demi’s ears. It was a moment later that she realized it was her ex-best friend’s favorite Paramore song that was playing.
Cause we are broken
What must we do to restore
Our innocence
And all the promise we adored
Give us life again cause we just wanna be whole
Demi glared at the radio wishing that it would sense her disapproval and change the song immediately. After such a horrible day at the studio Demi wasn’t in the mood to be reminded of all the pain she was trying to get past. Demi and Selena were no longer friends. She didn’t need a constant reminder of how she had screwed everything up. She didn’t need to remember how much she lost. Demi quickly shut the radio off as she didn’t want to chance any other radio stations and what offending songs might be playing on the others.
Instead Demi began to look at everything that was surrounding her. She began noting the many different customizable license plate numbers as she tried to decipher them. Then she began to note how many were actually Los Angeles residents as opposed to people from the other forty nines states of the US. She knew it was a childish activity, but sitting in a car alone with fear of the radio left Demi with very little options when it came to entertainment.
It was as she was staring at the cars surrounding her did she notice that in the lane farthest from Demi was a car that looked awfully familiar. Demi wracked her brain trying to figure out why the car looked so familiar. It was only when she was able to ease her own car up a little did she notice that the reason the car looked familiar was because it belonged to Brian, Selena’s step Father and that Selena was sitting in the passenger seat. Demi cursed her luck. The only good thing about it was that Selena was completely unaware of her presence. Demi began to obsessively stare at her best friend from a distance. She knew it was as close to Selena as she was ever going to get again.
“Why’d I have to be so stupid,” Demi muttered angrily at herself.
Demi fought back her anger and just stared at Selena. She took in every detail that she could. Even from far away Selena looked as beautiful as ever. Demi didn’t understand how she could have easily let that girl go without a fight. Then Demi remembered. She had let everything get to her head. She had let being famous take over every reasonable sense she had. She had forgotten about all the times that Selena had comforted her after a hard day at school when she had been endlessly bullied. She had forgotten the nights where she would sneak over to Selena’s house just to hear the other girl tell Demi she was beautiful. She had forgotten all those times because for the first time in her life she was the most desired person ever. She let the fact that everyone wanted to be her friend get to her head. She forgot whose friendship really meant something.
It was then that she noticed a car hurdling like crazy on the other side of the road. That car was speeding right towards Selena’s car. In that short moment Selena turned her head and their eyes met. Demi’s eyes widened with horror as the other car slammed into Selena’s. Her screams were lost in the noise of the explosion as Brian’s and the speeding car exploded right before her eyes.
Screams filled Demi’s room as she sat up gasping for breath. She soon realized that it had only been a nightmare. However, the terror she felt didn’t subside because the dream had felt so real. Even if it had been just a dream she had just watched Selena explode and Demi didn’t think that was going to be something she could just shake off from. Her bed room door opened and Demi watched as her Mother rushed over to her side.
“What happened?” Dianna asked softly.
“Nothing Mom,” Demi replied shakily, “Just a really vivid nightmare.”
“Want to tell me about it?” Dianna asked.
Demi thought about all the times on the road when her Mom hadn’t been there. She thought about all the times she had called Selena in the middle of the night because she had had another nightmare or she had just needed someone to talk to. She no longer had that because Demi had gone and let fame get to her head. Demi realized the scariest part of the nightmare was how right it was about how everything had ended with Selena. She had never admitted it to herself, but she really had been the reason her friendship with Selena had dissolved. She was the reason she no longer had a best friend. Moment’s later fear set in about just how truthful the dream had been. Demi suddenly felt a strong urge to make sure that Selena was alright. To make sure that she really hadn’t exploded in a fire.
Demi leaped out of bed and raced to her closet to pull on a pair of converse and her leather jacket. She didn’t care that she looked like a mess with a pair of sweats and her black AC DC t-shirt. She ignored her Mother’s protests as she ran out of her room and down the stairs. She didn’t care that when she returned her Mom just might ground her for life. She didn’t care that her Mom might pull the plug on her upcoming concert. All she cared about was making sure that Selena was ok.
It seemed like an eternity to the rock star before she pulled her car into the familiar driveway that belonged to her former best friend. It had been so long since she had last set foot in the house. Yet she remembered everything about it. She quickly cut the ignition and ran up to the house hoping that Brian hadn’t moved the spare key out from under a loose floor board by the door. She grinned triumphantly when she discovered the key was still there.
She quickly unlocked the front door and navigated her way through the darkened house like it hadn’t been months since she had last been there. Some things Demi would just never be able to forget. When she reached the door to Selena’s room she hesitated for a moment. It was only then she realized what she was doing and what the consequences might be. She knew Selena hated her so she knew her ex- best friend wasn’t going to be exactly receptive to Demi all of a sudden being in her room after all this time. Then the images of Selena blowing up filled her mind and Demi pushed back all of her concerns. She threw the door opened and was relieved to find Selena sitting at desk quietly talking to someone on her lap top.
Selena spun around when she heard the door open and Demi could see the shock spread on her features. Their eyes locked together for what seemed like an eternity before Selena turned back to her computer.
“I got to go Tay,” Selena told the screen, “I’ll call you later.”
Selena waited for a moment and Demi figured it was to hear Taylor Swift’s response before she closed the lap top. Demi nervously fidgeted with her fingers as she waited for Selena to turn back around. She then realized that she didn’t need Selena’s expected anger to wake up the entire house so Demi quickly closed the bed room door behind her.
“What are you doing here?” Selena asked.
Demi was surprised when she didn’t hear any anger or hatred in Selena’s voice. She just seemed surprised. For so long Demi had thought the other girl hated her and that was why she had never tried to call her and make things right. She had just thought it was a lost cause. But as she watched Selena her eyes just revealed how hurt and surprised she was.
“I wanted to make sure you hadn’t blown up,” Demi whispered quietly.
A look of confusion crossed Selena’s features before realization hit the other girl.
“You had a nightmare?” Selena asked.
Demi nodded as she fought the urge not to turn her attention to the floor beneath her.
“I had to make sure you were ok,” Demi replied, “It sounds stupid now that I’m standing here. Your obviously fine and not near any car wreckages.”
Demi decided that she was going to leave before she embarrassed herself any further.
“Demi.”
Demi froze as Selena’s hand appeared around her own arm. She hadn’t expected Selena to stop her. She hadn’t expected Selena to care anymore. Demi had only wanted to make sure that Selena was alright, but it had turned into so much more.
“I know you hate me,” Demi said quietly, “You don’t have to tell me.”
“I don’t hate you.”
Demi turned around. The surprise she felt inside from hearing those four little words that Selena had just spoken were evident on her face. She tried to take in this new information, but for so long she had thought Selena hated her and now that she knew it wasn’t true Demi wasn’t sure what to do.
“How can you not?” Demi asked, still not believing the words she heard, “The way I treated you. The way I’ve been treating you.”
Selena sighed and turned her attention onto the ground. Demi’s arm felt cold where Selena’s hand once lay. She felt all those old emotions she felt for the other girl come swarming back.
“I wanted to hate you,” Selena admitted, “I really did. But I love you too much to hate you. I always hoped you would wake up and come back to me so we could work everything out.”
Demi was surprised at what she was hearing. All this time that she had spent trying to give Selena the space that she thought the other girl wanted could have been spent trying to make things right. Demi was almost glad that the nightmare had plagued her unconscious. Without the dream she knew she never would have gone to Selena’s house.
“I’m sorry I let fame get to my head,” Demi told her.
“I know,” Selena told her.
Demi sighed with relief and allowed Selena to pull her in for a hug. Maybe at the moment things weren’t okay but Demi felt new hope rise in her that things would be ok once more. Who knows? She might even one day find the courage to tell Selena how she really felt about her.
