An enthusiastic crowd greeted country powerhouse Reba McEntire and pop star and "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson with thunderous applause Saturday night, at the WVU Coliseum. The two took the stage to perform to a large crowd during their 2 Worlds 2 Voices 2008 Tour.
Warming up the crowd was surpirse guest Melissa Peterman, better known as Barbara Jean from McEntire's TV sitcom "Reba." Her stand-up routine involved her channeling the Barbara Jean character and talking about her friendship with McEntire and Clarkson.
There is one downside to being friends with Reba and Kelyy, she said, joking.
"Karaoke is no longer fun," she said, following it up by belting out a medley of common karaoke songs. "That's what it should sound like," she shouted.
McEntire and Clarkson took to the stage after a short intermission, opening the night with "Sweet Dreams," by Patsy Cline, followed up by the Eurythmics song of the same name.
McEntire hit most of her well-known songs, including "Why Haven't I Heard From You," "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," "Does He Love You," "Is There Life Out There," and "I'm a Survivor."
Clarkson sonds included "Walk Away," "Behind These Hazel Eyes," "Miss Independent," and "A Moment Like This."
Of course, during the encore, both returned to the stage and blasted the crowd with "Since U Been Gone." They followed with "Because of You" and ended the night with "Fancy."
McEntire and Clarkson shared the spotlight the entire night, and both sang every song, trading places on backup vocals.
"We've been having a blast," Reba said about the tour. The WVU performance was only the third concert of their tour, but the two have known each other for awhile. They performed together during the CMT show "Crossroads" which sparked the idea for the concert tour.
"This is the coolest tour of my life," Clarkson said onstage Saturday. "I've been waiting to do this my whole life." She said she listened to McEntire growing up and loved her music.
"Kelly's been good for me because she likes all types of music," McEntire said.
Twin sisters Kelly Leib and Dana Randall, both of Maryland, brought their children to see the concert. "I like the last two songs ["Because of You" and "Fancy"]," said Ashlee Leib, 10. Kaylee Leib, 7 and Macy Randall, 9, agreed.
"Their voices sound really good together," Kelly Leib said. "And there's no bad words," Dana Randall added.
The Leibs and the Randalls said they liked both Clarkson and McEntire and Kelly said they even had a cat named Fancy after the famous McEntire song.
Kenneth and Cathy Cook, of Wyoming County, also came to see the show. They like both Clarkson and McEntire, but they said they were probably more McEntire fans. "She (McEntire) always puts on a great show and it was extra special with Kelly tonight," Cathy Cook said.
Clarkson fans Devon Nolan and Caroline O'Ferrall, both of Baltimore, Md., said they were blown away by the concert. Nolan even lost he voice. O'Ferrall said her favorite songs were "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and "Because of You," but she likes McEntire now, too. "She puts on a good show and she's just an amazing singer," O'Ferrall said.
Karen Kearney and Allison Sauter drove from Pittsburgh to see the concert. "Fantastic. It was...I can't describe it," Kearney said after the show. "We think this should be made into a DVD. The whole tour should be."
"I actually am a very big country fan, and I love it whenever two different artists marry the things that they do," Sauter said. "For two really strong voices, it was really cool to hear them harmonize."
