Chapter 17

Kara sat outside the Red Palace, surveying what she could see of Wonderland. It seemed brighter, now. There were strange birds flying about, and the flowers were all tittering again. It had been about an hour since Roslin and that Six had retired to talk about the terms of the surrender.

Gaius suddenly materialized right next to her. He gave her a creepy once-over, looking her up and down. “How fine you look when dressed in rage. Your enemies are fortunate your condition is not permanent.” His smirk widened. “You’re lucky, too. Red eyes suit so few.”

“What?” Kara’s hands flew up to her face, and Gaius started cackling. Kara punched him in the shoulder, hard, and he disappeared. When he reappeared, he was floating in front of her just out of arm’s reach.

“Always so feisty, Starbuck. I like that in a woman.”

“I’m sure you do,” Starbuck muttered.

“Get lost, Cheshire,” Kara heard from behind her, and Leoben stepped out onto the balcony. Gaius, still laughing, slowly disappeared. Leoben came and sat down next to her, observing her as she looked at the scenery.

“Now what, Leoben?” she asked.

“Now you can go back through the Looking Glass to continue on with your destiny. But first, you have to make peace with your past.”

“Why?”

“Because that part of you is gone. I can see now that you’ve changed, even since you’ve been here in Wonderland. I look at you now, and I don’t see Kara Thrace. I see an angel blazing with the light of God, an angel eager to lead her people home. After all, this has all happened before, and this will all happen again.”

Kara snorted. “I should know better by now than ask you something and expect a straight answer.”

Leoben shrugged. “You’re free now, to become what you really are.”

Kara looked at him seriously. “You’re not Leoben.”

“Never said I was.”

Some time later, Kara was out on the lawn in front of the Red Palace surrounded by both the Red Queen’s and the White Queen’s forces. Both women stood in front of her now. This world really is loony. In real life there’s no way Roslin and a Six could ever see eye-to-eye, Starbuck thought. That’s about as likely to happen as humans and cylons living peacefully together.

The Six spoke up first. “Thank you, Alice, for helping to reunite Wonderland. Together, my sister and I will rule justly over all.”

Kara was uncomfortable. “My name isn’t Alice,” she grumbled.

Roslin spoke next. “I believe I owe you a vessel, Starbuck, to travel back through the Looking Glass, but I just want you to know that you are always welcome to stay here in Wonderland.”

On Kara’s hip, the Vorpal Sword hummed its agreement. Kara reached down and unstrapped the sword. Holding it, she whispered to it, “Well, Vorp, it’s been fun. Don’t forget me now, you hear?” She thought to herself how nuts she really was that she was talking to a sword. Kara presented the sword to both Queens, and Adama stepped forward to receive it for them.

“Don’t worry, Starbuck. We’ll keep this sword in action for you,” he said.

“Hopefully there won’t be too much action,” Roslin said smiling. She turned around, and suddenly the air seemed heavier as she began to wave her arms. Kara watched, transfixed, as a viper suddenly appeared in front of her. It was perfect; it looked exactly like the vessel she had been in before she’d come through the Looking Glass, except it was so clean and white that it looked completely new.

“Wow, that’s some trick,” Kara breathed.

Kara suddenly laughed, and Adama moved in to clap her on the back. This seemed to be the first pebble that started the landslide of goodbyes, and Kara soon found herself being embraced, shaken, and lifted by everyone around her. Roslin had given her a light hug, and the Six had even kissed her on the cheek. Gaius had given her a hug that bordered on groping, and he only stopped when she threatened to break his tail. Helo had given her a rough hug, and Athena a long one, and then the two of them had walked off to stand together. By the end of it all, Kara was itching to hop into her shiny new viper and fly off.

At last, there was only one more person to say goodbye to. “I’ll walk you over to your ride,” Lee said, placing his hand on the small of her back. Around her, people started to disperse a little, sensing that the viper would need space to take off.

Once they were hidden by the viper from view, Lee pushed her up against the plane and kissed her soundly. Kara grabbed at his shoulder blades hard, before they both broke off. She rested her forehead against his chest. “So why is a raven like a writing desk, then?”

He smiled mischievously and winked. “No frakking clue.”

Laughing, she looked up and tapped his hat. “I guess I’ll miss seeing you wear this goofy hat.”

Lee took off the hat and observed it. “It’s getting a bit ratty, what with this hole and all. Maybe I’ll make a new one.”

“Nah, keep that one. I can’t imagine you as a Mad Hatter without it.”

They both laughed a little, and then grew quiet, content to just hold one another for a minute. “Do you think we’ll ever see each other again?” Kara asked.

Lee smiled. “I know we will. ‘Cause I’m Lee, and you’re Kara, and the rest of it isn’t worth a damn.”

“Thanks, Lee,” Kara whispered. She gave him one more lingering kissed, and then she climbed up into the cockpit of the white viper.

As she was about to pull the hatch down, Lee yelled up at her. “Hey Kara!”

“Yeah?”

“I still think we’ll get that bright and shiny future, one day. In some lifetime.”

Kara smiled down at him. “I’m gonna hold you to that. Goodbye, Lee.”

“I’ll see you on the other side.”

Her eyes glassy, Kara closed the hatch and fired up the viper. She flipped on all the necessary switches, and buckled herself in. Suddenly her ride was taking off, and she headed up into the sky. It was like the viper knew exactly what to do, and it shot up through the atmosphere. Suddenly, Kara was surrounded by a blindingly bright light, and she closed her eyes.

On the ground, the residents of Wonderland saw a twinkle, and then nothing. Lee pushed one hand into his pocket. “Goodbye, Kara Thrace,” he said, and tipped his hat to the sky. “You won’t be forgotten.”

* * *

When Kara came to, she had no idea what was going on. She was in a viper, and the last thing she remembered… What was the last thing she remembered? Oh! That’s right, she had been chasing a heavy raider with Lee at her wing. Right?

A light was blinking in the cockpit. She looked at it, and saw that it was for recon photography. Glancing over the pictures her viper had taken, she gasped. This was a livable planet, wasn’t it? It looked like it had water, land, clouds… Earth?

She checked her clock. Six hours. She’d been gone for six hours, and somehow she’d managed to find Earth. She couldn’t remember how she’d gotten there, though. There had to be some way to trace a path back, though, and Kara knew that she needed to bring this information back to the Galactica as soon as she could.

Kara saw another viper shoot by, and she raced off towards it. Her DRADIS was showing that there were cylons in the area as well, but she had sensitive information and needed to get back home now. She could get out and fight afterwards if necessary.

She and the other viper seemed to flirt around each other for a minute, separated by layers of clouds. Suddenly the other viper pulled closer, and though the pilot couldn’t see her, she could see him. Lee. Something suddenly tugged at her memory, something she should remember… But she couldn’t grasp it, and it slipped away as she thought about how excited she was to tell Lee about Earth.

She pulled up beside him, and he suddenly seemed to comprehend who she was. An incredulous look transformed his face. “Hi Lee,” she said, smiling.

“Kara?” he asked, disbelief coloring his tone.

Kara was suddenly struck with the notion that he would look good in a hat. Then, thinking that was a very ridiculous thought, she laughed. “Don’t freak out,” she told him, “It really is me. It’s gonna be okay, I’ve been to Earth. I know where it is, and I’m gonna take us there.”

And then Kara grinned. It seemed Leoben had been right. The last part of her journey was beginning.

A/N: Hey friends! It's been fun writing this, and I hope you all enjoyed it. This was really my first fanfiction, so we'll see if I keep going with it. For some reasons crossovers really appeal to me, but maybe I'll try a canon one sometime soon. Special thanks to all of you who've reviewed - your comments always put a smile on my face and made this worth writing. Catch ya later :)
