Aftermath

Our flat is at its tidiest and I have spent a sunny Sunday in a state of advanced calm. These are the unexpected rewards of last night's birthday party.

I have a tendency to ineffectual micromanagement and Saturday morning saw me making a list of tasks without which the party would fail. I arranged the furniture so that all the doors could close, I swept the kitchen balcony and I installed the goth loo paper. Meanwhile, j4 had designed and decorated her latest impressive cake. Thus the gods were propitiated and the fail was not found.

Thank you to all who came, some people travelling a long way on a hot day, in one case with a small child. I have been feeling rather emo lately so I appreciated the company of friends. I also appreciated the chocolates. There was real food for once, as vinaigrettegirl instantiated and ingratiated herself with tasty lasagne.

The party stretched from 4 o'clock to 2 o'clock, seeping from the living room to the library to the kitchen and back again (with a splitters' group on the front balcony seeking some air). I woke at 9 today to provide coffee for LNR and Mike while they bought Cambridge Folk Festival tickets online, and Mike helped me fry up a fry up for them and fivemack. I think this is why I slipped as a host and forgot to give them any cake to take home. j4 was still in bed meditating on the morning's lesson of moderation and repentance.

hairyears invited us to join him for afternoon tea: he may be surprised, or disappointed, that his excellent manners always put me at my ease, but I ought to emulate them next time I play host.

Damage: one table leg, one collapsed collapsible stool, one damp paperback. Neatly, for j4's 30th birthday party, I recycled 30 glass bottles.
