Kusano watches Shige far too much, he knows this, and he thinks he should do something about it. He should stop or he should say something or he should make himself less obvious. But sometimes he just can’t look away from the way Shige purses his lips when he’s focusing on his reading, or the pale line of his neck disappearing into the slightly-baggy collar of his t-shirt when he leans over to grab a pen.
He wants to say “Shige, I like you,” but it always comes out “what’re you reading?”, or “wow, you take a lot of notes,” or “how’s the book?” and that’s not what he means at all. He curses his own cowardice, but every time he says Shige’s name and those eyes look up at him, his resolve crumbles as if it never existed and he scrambles to find something coherent to say.
He’s really, really not used to feel uncomfortable, ever. He’s used to goofing off and being reckless and not caring what other people think. He can’t decide how he feels about this sudden change in character, but whatever his feelings are, he blames them on Shige and his perfect hair and his lips and his cheekbones. And he tries to leave it at that.
Sometimes, he looks up and their eyes meet. Kusano’s always the one to look away first, and he’s not sure that he’s comfortable with this. In fact, he’s pretty sure that he isn’t, but that doesn’t stop it from happening. He wonders if Shige’s noticed all his staring, how sometimes in the dressing room he sneaks peeks of Shige changing, the strong line of his spine and the curve of his back, the way his hair falls against his neck, the low waist of his pants. He wonders if Shige would say something if he did.
What he knows, for a fact, is that someday soon, he’s going to do something about it. He’s tired of his tied tongue and his furtive glances, and he knows that he’s just going to push Shige back against the mirrors in the dressing room and touch him. He’s going to have those lips and that smile, he’s going to slide his hands under that shirt and touch that skin. That’s what he’s going to do.
He just hopes that Shige won’t mind.
