Name: Heather
Age: 23
Location: 20 minutes out of Chicago, Illinois
About Me: I graduated a year ago from a small liberal arts college in Illinois. I majored in English writing and Spanish (minored in French) and hope to one day publish some short stories a literary magazine not affiliated with my school. I'm kind of unemployed (starting a temp job mid July) and kind of trying to get certified to teach. I don't post about politics, but I'd say I'm conservative, so if that bothers you excessively, don't bother friending me. ;)
Interests: Novels & short stories, poetry, language, music, interior design, making things pretty, getting dressed up, oxford commas, tea cups, rpg video games, Age of Empires, Latin America, photography, collecting weird earrings, learning to cook, travel, Spanish, French
TV/Anime: How I Met Your Mother, Communnity, Sherlock, Chuck, HGTV, & Cake Boss. I haven’t watched much anime lately, but I still love Inuyasha, Kenshin, Chrno Crusade, & FLCL.
Music: I typically prefer folk (The Weepies, Hem, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes) and indie (The Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Laura Veirs). Because I spent all of high school and college in choir and voice lessons, I also have a certain respect for choral and classical music. I occasionally write music with my brother; we record it with a few friends in the recording studio taking up our basement. Sometimes I post it.
Movies: I have a love/hate relationship with movies. I absolutely hate most of what gets into theatres because of how shallow and artless it is. I want America to embrace film as an art form instead of an easier medium for plot-driven stories. That being said, I do enjoy the occasional chick flick or drama. I like foreign films (especially if they’re in Spanish or French because I feel like I'm studying when I watch them) and the way independent films were before “indie films” became a stereotypical genre. I also think Pixar does a nice job with their movie making (minus Cars and Cars 2), as does Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. Also, I hate zombie movies because they freak me out. I don't do horror, even (maybe especially) really dumb horror movies.
Books: I like reading contemporary fiction (Stuart Dybek, Tobias Wolff, Jonathan Safran Foer, Michael Chabon, Junot Diaz to name a few), Latin American/Spanish fiction (Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, Julia Alvarez). I own a lot of the Best American Short Stories anthologies and have almost read them all, as well as a few collections by specific authors (Tobias Wolff and Michael Chabon). I enjoy a lot of classic literature as well, though I’m not crazy about the Victorian era. I have never read Jane Austen. I'm sorry. I like stories about the American pioneer days and westward expansion. I’m not sure why, but I have since I was a kid reading The Little House on the Prairie. I still love the Harry Potter series (am re-reading them in Spanish, currently on book 5). While I don't really write poetry (besides lyrics), I enjoy reading it. Here I generally mean published poetry - the kind found in anthologies or collections. I like Dorianne Laux a lot, just read through Facts About the Moon.
About My Journal: I write about my life. It isn’t as personal as a diary. I know no one cares what I ate for breakfast. I generally post about movies I saw and would recommend, books I've read, stories I’m writing, places I've been. Sometimes I post poetry I like, songs I’ve written, photographs I’ve taken. I’ve had my livejournal since 2003 and most of the people I started with on my friends list no longer use livejournal and I want to have the kind of journal where I’m writing to the people on my friends list - you know, like trying to become real friends. So if you add me, I’ll try and be your friend. I’ll try to comment on most of your entries and try to get to know you better.
What I Write/Don't Write: I write short stories, novellas, and flash fiction. Nothing too genre-specific, just contemporary literary fiction. Stories with heart. I’m part of a bi-weekly workshop group with students from the creative writing program where I went to college, so I’m constantly revising things. I also write fanfiction from time to time but I usually don't post it on my main journal.
What I Read: I’ll basically read anything, as long as it has drive, purpose, and good grammar. I’ll read dark fiction as long as it has a point other than to make me uncomfortable. I don't like when things are written for solely shock value. I don't critique poetry. I have never studied poetry writing and do not feel comfortable critiquing it. Plus, I really hate reading bad poetry.
Could I Edit Someone's Work: Yes
What I'm Looking For: Friends! Who actually comment on my entries. Writers or readers who share interests with me. People I can get to know and share my thoughts with.
