This seems like the right time

Name: Melissa
Age: 19
Location: St. Louis
About Me: I'm a boring white girl from the suburban Midwest and I'm growing up in front of a television. I read and do arts and crafts and go out with friends, but it's a lot of TV. I've always been about storytelling and even as a child I would whine about cartoons not having enough plot continuity or character development. (Actually, I still do that. Don't get me started on Pokemon.) Throughout my childhood and adolescence I floated between different dream jobs, all of them creative, and a few years ago I had the epiphany to combine my talent for writing with my adoration of TV. Since then it's escalated into an intense do-or-die focus on being a cult TV god with a career of brilliant shows, many awards and accolades, and a sweet office. But until then, I'm a university freshman majoring in English with a Creative Writing emphasis. I enjoy baked goods, long walks, collecting DVDs, scavenger hunts, midnight movies, and high fives.
About My Journal: I've had it for more than four years and over 1000 posts, and it's seen me through my awkward and formative teenage times. There's a Twitter cross-post every day, and other entries are typically about my daily life and experiences, with some fandom stuff and memes. There's very little angst or drama. I like to post pictures. I've recently started Writing Wednesday to get myself to write more often, and to share that writing. My journal is public.
What I Write: I want to create television shows, and I have five series right now, in varying degrees of detail. You can read brief descriptions of them here. Right now all I have for them are drabbles, short stories, and lots and lots of notes - I'm not ready to tackle writing actual scripts yet. Besides short fiction for potential television series, I also experiment with humor pieces and some creative non-fiction and essays.
What I Don't Write: Novels - My stories need to be more than just words on paper, they need visuals and spoken dialogue and music to go along with them. That's just how I think. Fanfiction - I feel uncomfortable with characters that aren't mine. Poetry - My mind just doesn't work in stanzas and can't figure out what to do with line breaks, and prefers a plot to go along with all that metaphor and allegory.
What I Read: Other than what's prescribed to me by school work, I like to read book series, seeing how characters change over time and how things carry over from book to book. I love Lynn Flewelling, her Nightrunner and Tamir series, and Harry Potter will always be close to my heart. Right now, I'm enjoying the Anita Blake books, although I'm not very far into the series. My stand-alone favorites are Watchmen and Good Omens.
They say that if you want to be a writer, you read. I want to be a TV writer, so I watch TV. I feel it inspires me more than books do. My top shows are The X-Files, Firefly, Lost, Supernatural, House, Bones, and Arrested Development.
What I Don't Read: I generally don't read fanfiction, but I'll make an exception if someone really wants my opinion on it. I do read some poetry, but it's not a favorite. I won't read teen-oriented novels, the kind filled with relationship drama, hormonal angst, and texting, because I really can't relate to them. I don't read "classic" books recreationally, because I know I'll probably have to read them at some point for school, but I'd like to read some once I've graduated college.
What I'm Looking For: People to tell me stories and people for me to tell stories to.
Could I Edit Someone Else's Work: Possibly, if you're patient. College keeps me very busy.
Where You Could Find Me: wilky_wit
