Hi! Hmm...there seems to be a more or less standard format for introductions here.
Name: Deirdre
Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
About Me: I've always been creative, writing poems, drawing, making things, writing fiction. I studied Anthropology in school, and that has remained a fascination for me. I also work for a living, or did until I got laid off in January. I'm still seeking regular employment, but in the meantime am trying to step up work on my fiction.
About My Blog: I have an ongoing story there, currently titled Fireborn, and a short story set in the same world. Lately I have also been posting a lot about my garden (I have an organic garden in my large city lot, with roses and herbs and vegetables), with pictures. I also plan to be posting poetry, songs, artwork, and more good stuff.
What I Write: Fiction is predominantly fantasy or science fiction; songs are folk or filk or pagan. Poetry can be anything. I'm fascinated by how different people really are from each other, in likes and dislikes, the way they think, the way they approach problems, and so on. I'm also fascinated by ecology, by how the natural world--the real one, or a fictional one--fits together.
What I Don't Write: I promise to never write boring essays on topics like accounting.
What I Read: Lots. Well, less fiction at the moment, because I've noticed I write less when I'm in the middle of someone else's book. Fantasy and Science Fiction. Anthropology. Ancient Religions. Articles on just about any science or medical issue. Other things that strike my fancy.
Can I critique someone else's work? Sure. I've been told I'm good at explaining how grammar is used to convey meaning, which is much more useful than trying to learn it as a set of abstract rules. (Of course, I've always been really skilled at finding "creative" ways to interpret abstract rules...)
Favorite Authors: A few come to mind right away, all favorites for very different reasons:
haikujaguar . Robin McKinley. Kelly Armstrong. Elizabeth Bear (
matociquala ). Kathy Mar. Talis Kimberly. Ask me on a different day and the list would be different.
What I'm Looking For: Readers. Friends. Cool stuff to think about. Good conversation.
Endorsement:
ysabetwordsmith recently wrote, of one of my stories:
This first piece is a parable about why people are different and the trouble caused by prejudice. It is beautiful and haunting, and I look forward to seeing more.
