Name: Vari
Age: old enough to almost know better. Not that it's ever stopped me.
Location: Bellingham, WA, United States
About me: Let's see, I'm a female, university student (English major, if you were curious) who transplanted to the Pacific Northwest three years ago. Books and music are my passion along with history. For fun, I go into Seattle on day trips or to concerts when I have the time. When I don't I read extensively and I'm always looking for new books and authors to sample. My taste is movies is almost as diverse as my taste in books, but I love horror films, the classics in particular. I have an axe to grind against remakes and, like the rest of my opinions, I tend to be outspoken about that.
About my journal: It's friends only at this point, and I've been using it since 2002. For a long while I seperated into a personal and writing journal but now, after realizing I only update the personal one, I'm starting to post there first. Most of what you'll find now are day to day mundane matters and rants, but coming soon will be reviews, concert updates, more mundane matters, rants and my work.
What I like: I love music, by and large, it's my life. I listen mostly to metal, hardcore, punk, and classical. Discussion of bands takes up large portions of my journal, Avenged Sevenfold, Judas Priest, Rob Zombie and Motorhead being among those fawned over. As I mentioned above, I also love movies, any kind, and in some cases really, really bad ones. What can I say? I have eccentric tastes sometimes. As far as television goes there aren't too many series I still follow and what I do watch rarely makes it into my journal.
What I dislike: Conflict on the internet bothers me, particularly on my journal since I don't find it worthwhile. In general, I don't like most of the new Saturday morning cartoons, they've sort of gone downhill from when I was a kid. Remakes of classic films leave a bad taste in my mouth and I stay on the fence about books adapted into films for a very long time. Other than that, you'll find I'm very easy going.
What I read: To be honest, there is very little genre-wise that I do not read. I have a fondness for fantasy, historical fiction, philosophy, classics, suspense and horror. Also, I should give fair warning that I can (and will) discuss mythology frequently, particuarly Greco-Roman although I'm becoming better versed in Nordic and Egyptian, as well.
What I don't read: Once again, as far as genres go, I've been proven wrong often enough about genre books that I'll read anything. There are certain authors I have been badly burned by, however, that I won't read. So, most of Laurell K. Hamilton's current catalouge, Kim Harrison, Ernest Hemmingway (I know he's an American staple, but I have the hardest time with his characterizations), and Tenesse Williams to name a few.
Favorite authors: Neil Gaiman, Simon R. Green, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Plato, Aristophanes, Keats, T.S. Elliot, Stephen King, Piers Anthony, Anne Bishop, Sartre, Voltaire, Shakespeare, Edward Albee, Ovid, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Mary Shelly, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekov, Sergei Lukyanenko, Storm Constantine
What I write: Short stories, for the most part. I focus on character development and try and usually end up writing around personal themes and questions. I love working with archetype figures and fleshing them out, and use mythology as a fundemental base. Predominantly, I post general and slash fanfiction that I work on. Everything will be clearly labeled for convienance.
What I don’t write: I should say, what I can't write and that would be young adult and 'chick lit.' I've never tried but given how difficult it is for me to read and relate to... I have no desire to try.
Could you edit someone else's work?: Happily! I am a full time student with volenteer and work responsibilities so it may take me time for a thorough edit, but I'm always happy to do it. A quick disclaimer, though: I do my best to be honey and lightness when giving my overview, but I'm a brutal editing.
What I’m looking for: Friends, reviewers, other writers and people who can supply book recomendations are always great. I'd also to do some sort of writer's group for people in the area, or an email/lj based one if people are interested in that.
