"This had initially looked like a peacekeeping operation by the Russians, but it has turned out to be a much wider conflict than we had anticipated. I think this "invasion" was a very calculated step by Russia. The context of this incursion resembles the Israel-Lebanon war 2 years ago. Israel just didn't attack Hezbollah controlled regions, but all of Lebanon. The constant negative media coverage eventually turned the opinion against the conflict, and Israel withdrew. However, in Russia's case, the Olympics will detract from any media coverage of this conflict, thus giving them almost a free pass."

The media is all over the Russia and Georgia conflict, maybe cutting to other stories and the Olympics for five minutes. Despite all the "Soviet propaganda" that seems to the floating about this murky water, there is a little more than a vague motive the Russians have hinted towards. Regime change has been thrown out there, and it is probable that an overthrow of Mikheil Saakashvili is in Russia's agenda. I ask if Europe is still a hot spot for war, haven't we passed that era already? I don't think this will escalate into a major European crisis however. I do hope (and think) that once Russia is finished with its goals of overthrowing and replacing the government of Georgia --"Purely an American invention" (paraphrased from Churkin when asked about regime change).--or whatever those goals may be-- will withdraw and perhaps let the EU catch its breath.
