Character History:

Darkstar first appears under his legal/given name of Michael Morningstar in the first season of Ben 10: Alien Force. His initial motivation is finding and attaining sustenance. He is a vampiric life form that needs to syphon life energy (canonically referred to as mana) from other living things in order to survive. Initially, he is able to accomplish this by physical touch via lamprey like mouths in the palms of his hands. In his human form, he is handsome, charming, and manipulative, three traits that have enabled him to survive unnoticed on Earth into his high school years. However, his life changes forever when he is sought out by Ben, Gwen, and Kevin, three teenagers on a quest to save the world from a genocidal alien invasion.
Ben 10 and his companions are looking for aid, they turn to other Plumber’s Kids for help them stop the impending Highbreed invasion. These “kids,” often young adults, are the descendants of Plumbers, or, galactic law enforcement agents who function on Earth under their code name. Kevin’s badge leads them to Michael, who also is in possession of a similar Plumber’s badge. These devices are important because they are handed down from parent to child in cases where a child of mixed human and alien heritage begins to exhibit signs of taking after their alien parent. The badge can act as a sort of galactic passport or green card that allows them to remain on Earth. In addition, Plumbers badges can function as universal translators, communicators, and tracking devices. Although the details of the device’s true origin are never truly revealed, he smiles and says that his father gave it to him.
Michael immediately makes a good impression on Ben and Gwen, but Kevin is suspicious and exhibits signs of jealousy towards the new recruit. Mike helps the team rescue people from a vehicle accident on the highway, which it is later revealed, he inadvertently caused by feeding on his classmate Trina, who lated wandered into the street in a daze. He immediately expresses interest in helping them on their mission to save the world and takes them back to his home, which is the Guest house of his family’ estate. He says that his mother and her new husband live in the main house, but they leave him alone and let him do what he wants. Michael is very forward with Gwen, asking her out and exploiting Kevin’s obvious jealousy for his own ends. It is revealed later that Gwen possesses potent mana that Mike is feeding off while distracting her and her teammates. Michael shows them all his machinery and alien tech, while subtly undermining Kevin several times. Ben is very impressed and Gwen appears smitten, but discovers a star shaped bite on her wrist. To hide it from the others, she rolls down her sleeves. Without consulting the other two members of his team, Ben invites Mike to join them in preventing the Highbreed invasion. Mike agrees to help them just as the lights suddenly grow dark.
The power goes out and the group discover that a massive power drain is affecting the area. Mike goes with the team to check out the disturbance and find that a group of zombie girls are physically draining the power and feeding off of it. Mike recognizes them as girls from his school and suggests that the team try not to hurt them so that they can find a cure for whatever it is. During the fight, Gwen collapses, but Mike catches her and allows her to share his energy to win the fight. He blasts at a group of pipes that subsequently fall and scatter the zombie girls, who retreat. Mike then invites Gwen to dinner and she accepts. The two of them leave after Kevin stops arguing with them, but deciding to spy on Mike instead. While Ben tries to talk him out of it, Kevin picks the lock on Mike’s door, however, the
In reality, Mike has lured Gwen away to his secluded headquarters near the river where he begins to feed on her, revealing toothy maws in the palms of his hands that leave star shaped bite marks. Shortly, Kevin and Ben arrive on Kevin’s hunch since he noticed the star marks on the zombies’ arms and that Gwen had lowered her sleeves. In addition, Kevin deduces that Mike is behind the zombie girls’ condition since their new recruit asked them not to hurt the Mike has already drained most of Gwen’s mana, leaving her ashen and almost comatose. Mike’s skin becomes covered in a thin layer of gold and his powers receive a significant power boost. He easily knocks out Ben and Kevin, as he is gloating however, Gwen regains consciousness and forces her energy back out of Mike, as well as retrieving and restoring the energy of the zombie girls as well. The end result leaves Mike scarred and drained of energy. Kevin then breaks his Plumber’s badge, saying he doesn’t deserve it. The three leave Mike alone and leave to look for other Plumber’s Kids to help them.

Michael returns in the second season in Darkstar Rising, where he appears in his current form, a grotesque distortion of his original appearance: sunken eyes, taut skinned, and balding with a dark grey pallor. He adopts the name of Darkstar, saying that “Michael Morningstar no longer exists.” He frames Ben Tennyson, Kevin Levin, and Gwen Tennyson by reporting to the Plumber, Magister Ghilil, that they were falsely presenting themselves as the law enforcement officers and acting illegally in their stead. He then breaks into a Highbreed ship and defeats its commanding officer, draining it into submission and then bargaining with it to further his own plan for vengeance. While Ben and his friends try to find the (nonexistant) impersonators to clear their name, matters are made worse for the hero trio when the Highbreed Darkstar attacked earlier appears and accuses the three of attacking and harassing him, complaining to Ghilil. The Plumber believes the other alien without question, but Darkstar appears to reveal that he has manipulated all of them and proceeds to strike them with dark bolts of energy and draining them all of mana until they are unconscious. He is unable to capture Gwen, who blocks him with a mana shield and escapes. Darkstar binds his prisoners and takes them to his old headquarters where he reveals his ruined visage to them and informs his unfortunate guests that since his hunger and need for mana have increased exponentially since their last encounter, they will serve as his food source and hopefully restore his former appearance as well. He begins to feed off of them, but is interrupted by Gwen, who has brought a group of the captured Highbreed’s subservient DNAliens to free their commander and Gwen’s teammates. Darkstar fights them, but is ultimately overpowered by their numbers combined with Ben’s use of the Omnitrix. At the end of the battle, Darkstar is taken into custody by Ghilil and sent to the Null Void, a pocket dimension prison.

In the season finale, War of the Worlds, Gwen asked Cooper, a technopathic Plumber’s Kid, to retrieve Darkstar from the Null Void to assist them in saving the world from the genocidal Highbreed. Cooper was able to locate Darkstar easily and he was immediately suspicious of Gwen and her allies. Gwen bartered with him and suggested that if he helped them fend off Earth’s attackers, than they would free him from the Null Void. Darkstar agreed and true to his word, did assist in repelling the invasion. It turns out, he was part of the team after all, if only for a few hours.
During the siege of Los Soledad Base, Darkstar drains numerous DNAliens after one of them throws him into a rage by knocking his mask off. Upon discovering that feeding from multiple DNAliens at the same time has the same effect as Gwen’s mana, Darkstar momentarily regains his handsome features, however, to keep them, he would have to drain all the life force from them, leaving the posessed humans within them dead. Ben Tennyson interrupts him, reminding him that the DNAliens are really human beings. Darkstar insists that they are in a battle and must do what they have to to survive, but Ben again pleads for him to stop, and Darkstar does stop his actions, as he does so, his appearance reverts to its now familiar corpse-like state and he quickly hides it under his mask, which he retrieves from where it was knocked. He continues to help Ben and the others fend off the invasion, but disappears once the dust is clear.

Darkstar does not appear again until the episode Trade Off, where he emotionally manipulates a mutated Kevin Levin into assisting him retrieve an ancient alien artifact known as the Dominus Librium that drains power from living things and transfers their energy to another. However, in doing so, it cancels out any powers the person already has. Darkstar promises that in return for helping him retrieve the Dominus Librium, by using the artifact’s properties, he will change the young man back to his human self while restoring himself in the process. The two do manage to retrieve the item and Darkstar does restore Kevin to his human form and himself to his former appearance as well. However, he punches Kevin in the face and retrieves the artifact for himself, warning the other young man not to cross his path again, but they are both now free to get on with their lives. Later, Gwen senses Darkstar’s mana signature on Kevin when she touches him and seeks her old enemy out. Darkstar reveals that the Dominus Librium absorbs energy and transfers it to the holder (currently himself) and that it is keeping him sustained and now that she is here, he will absorb her pure Anodyte mana and reach his true potential and his thirst for power will finally be quenched. Kevin appears on the scene after realizing where Gwen went and tears the Dominus Librium away from Darkstar, disrupting the energy flow of the artifact and returning both of them to their previous states. Enraged, Darkstar retrieveshis helmet and vanishes into the night, swearing vengeance once again.

Character Personality:
Darkstar is literally power hungry and will do anything he can to feed himself. While he is an adept fighter and is extremely quick and agile, he is more likely to stalk his prey or try to convince them to go along with his plans rather than exerting himself too much physically. While he is capable of it, the extended use of his powers will leave him hungrier and weaker than he would like to be, making him vulnerable to attack. Darkstar is arrogant, which stems largely from the fact that until recently, nothing could actually hurt him. He is very self-centered and has an enormous ego and a superiority complex that causes him to think that he is better than everyone else. This causes him to have a very dry, usually sarcastic tone when talking to people who are bragging or he finds to be less intelligent than himself. He does not mince words when criticizing others since he does not fear any retaliation from them since he could easily render them weak or unconscious. He believes in the survival of the fittest and rarely shows compassion or remorse. He also has a habit of referring to females as “lovely” as though it is part of a title.
Darkstar is very vain and is highly sensitive to how he looks, which is why he obsessively wears his mask in public and when addressing people, at least in his current condition. The only time he takes if off is either in private, or when it is forcibly removed. He has willingly removed it twice in canon, once to reveal his disfigurements to Ben and Kevin, and again after his features have been temporarily restored in Trade Off.
Darkstar is also manipulative. He can easily exploit emotional imbalances in others for his benefit. He often will play off of peoples’ insecurities in order to gain a kind of leverage over them or to manipulate them into doing what he wants by disguising it as something they also want through words. Many times, he would rather do this than outright physically fight, though he is quite capable of it. Darkstar also has a habit of not being completely honest. He may only tell the part of the story that he wants you to hear in order to get people to cooperate with him on the rare occasion he needs assistance.

Darkstar is a solitary hunter. He works alone for the most part, but will temporarily form alliances if it suits his best interest and he has something to gain from it.

Powers:
Darkstar possesses the ability (though it is more of a vampiric need) to drain life energy (mana) from other living beings. The amount of energy he drains directly influences the numbers of powers he himself possesses at any given time. Darkstar is able to accomplish this through two different methods. The first is through physical touch via two toothy maws in the palms of his hands. In order to function day to day, he needs to feed off the mana of others at regular intervals. During the first season of Ben 10:Alien Force, he preyed upon the female students at his prep school by holding their hands/touching/hugging/carrying them to safety. Victims who are drained using this method often exhibit signs of forgetfulness and memory loss, not knowing where they have been or what has been going on during the time that Darkstar has been feeding on them. The second way he gathers mana is by shooting sparkling ebon beams of energy draining power out of the mouths in his palms. The attack leaves victims cold, clammy and drained of energy. Prolonged exposure to these beams can result in permanent physical damage or death to the person(s) being drained. He has attempted on numerous occasions to drain the Anodyte mana of Gwen Tennyson in order to restore his attractive human appearance and has been thwarted in all of them thus far.
In addition to his mana absorption abilities, Darkstar also possesses a super dense cellular structure that enables him to withstand physical damage that would otherwise kill a normal human being. He can survive being punched into the ground by Ben in the form of Humongosaur or thrown across the bridge of a starship by any of the invading Highbreed.
Darkstaralso has enhanced strength and is very quick and agile. He is easily able to dodge physical blows. by springing out of the way.
Similar to the way Anodytes can sense mana/life energy in canon, Darkstar can also tell when someone is present or disguised due to their distinct mana signature. He is also able to use this ability to track whomever he is looking for if they have been in his vicinity recently or in a place for a prolonged period of time. It can be assumed that in Darkstar’s case, this is a form of evolutionary survival skills in action.

When he has absorbed a significant amount of mana, Darkstar emits a twinkling golden glow and is able to fly and project bolts of destructive energy. When he has consumed a substantial amount of pure mana, his skin gains a protective, metallic gold shell.

[The image flickers before it comes into focus. Darkstar is sitting next to a pool of glowing orange water.]

Huh. Glowing water? Now that is something.

[He reaches his hand over the surface without touching it, as if he is feeling for something.]

Well, at least I don’t have to worry about the water eating me. I’ve seen enough things around here for it not to be surprising if it did. I wonder if the bath house water glows?

[He turns to face the camera, eyes narrowing.]

That camera is on, isn’t it? Who is watching this? Who would want to? Fine. Don’t answer.

[Footsteps can be heard in the distance.]

It doesn’t matter. Whoever is out there, I’ll give you a good show.

Third Person:

Darkstar continued to walk down the street, eyes averted from anything that might look like it would talk back if he made eye contact with it. He wasn’t in the mood. He walked quickly and with purpose to nowhere in particular. His mind was working furiously over things that had been troubling him and he needed to walk if off. Here was just a good a place as any. The night was dark, but he didn’t mind that. He was used to it by now.

Michael Morningstar was always special. He was a handsome, personable, popular.

Darkstar, on the other hand, was none of those. He was ugly, broken, and untrustworthy.

The two of them shared the same body, though...and the same soul shredding hunger that suddenly flared up.

He hadn’t lied to Ben and Kevin when he told them that Michael Morningstar no longer existed. They were two entirely different people. It was hard to believe they were the same at one point, or that rather, he had been Michael Morningstar. It was humiliating. His body was burning through energy too fast now that he had tasted Anodyte mana and had it forcibly reversed out of his body. It felt like he couldn’t hold onto mana anymore...any of it. He had to hunt more often and larger and more powerful lifeforms...and it was quite clear to him that achieving his original goal of restoring himself to his former glory was going to take nothing less than pure Anodyte mana...but there was only one partial Anodyte on Earth that he knew of.

Darkstar hugged himself and ran gauntleted hands up and down his arms. The mouths in his palms gnashed in hunger, a deep, horrible feeling made worse by the fact that he knew they would not be sated completely anytime soon. That wasn’t all. He couldn’t go home looking like this, couldn’t go back to school...he had been revealed...not just...as he was now, but as he was before, a predator feeding on the weak and vulnerable. They all knew. His hunting grounds were compromised. Even if he was able to fix himself, he’d still have to make changes to his living arrangements. Yet, he could not help but think that it would be a lot easier to make those changes with a head of thick blonde hair, sparkling blue eyes, and a dashing smile. All he had going for him at the moment were a few sparse clusters of pale, cornsilk fine hair, faded blue eyes, and a face that looked like it belonged on something long dead. This made things harder. He had to be even more careful, more isolated and calculating now because he stood out like a sore thumb like this. It didn’t matter. He could take care of himself. He could handle this. He was better than all of them. He’d made mistakes, of course, everyone does, but he’d learned from them, hadn’t he?

Darkstar turned his masked face to the sky. A smattering of stars reflected in eyes that smiled menacingly when a delicious idea occurred to him.

Indeed, there was nowhere to go...but up.
