Is this scary to anyone else?

In 1920 over 40 million (perhaps closer to 50 million) people died of a flu virus.  And that's not just in some remote area of the world.  That's everywhere.  Worldwide. A  Pandemic ( Read more... )

dude... zombie armageddon! AGH!

seriously though; we ARE overdue, but if there was going to be a big, scary thing like the avian flu, it would have happened by now... i know that sounds like a copout, but there has to be some reason why there hasn't been an outbreak. also, remember the SARS thing?
after that debacle, i refuse to believe anything i read about any contagious viruses, ever, anymore. i was right in a "hot zone", and you know how many people died from it, total?
under 10.

i got the sniffles, but probably because i forgot to wash my hands before having my dinner that night. ;(

too be cliche, life is too short to be worried over stuff like this, hun.
if it happens, it happens - until then, let's have some more kfc!!

Well.. 770-something actually died from SARS, but yeah, very few in Canada and the U.S. I've just been watching the Avian flu for a few years now... and the thing is.. there's no set time limit as to how long it's supposed to take before people start spreading it to other people. Maybe never. Maybe v. quickly... so "it would have happend by now" is not really necessarily true, you know?

But yeah.. the SARS thing... I can understand your reluctance ~laughs~

yeah, 770 in china, which is notorious for not having very good health practices at all. and that was under a thousand THERE, so it turned out to be pretty weak.

and the avian flu, i've noticed there are a bunch of birds just spontaneously dying and dropping out of the air here, yeah.
like i said... if it happens, it happens. there's no use worrying over something that you can't do anything about anyway... and besides, all that stress will weaken your immune system. lol

Scary? Not really... Preoccupying perhaps. But after all, though the perspective of millions of deaths is not a nice a one, we can't forget that biologically we are still animals, and thus, we are subject to the laws of nature. But since as a race we are the "lawyers" and "politicians" among animals, we have cheated the natural laws countless times, most of the time without consequences ( ... )

Very... Malthusian ~chuckles~ But well put. And you're definately right about nature being more powerful than humanity. I think about that every time I see a natural disaster of any sort. Yet even so, as you said, people always disregard that and basically ignore the needs of the environment and build their cities and landfills and oil tankers. It's sad... as a human... to see what people have done. So then.. perhaps things like super viruses and bacteria are a way of nature taking recourse... revenge for humanity's stupidity.

That is a frightning thought, but a very obivious one.
We have seen the recent outbreaks in bird flu as they call it. I believe and it seems from what you say, you do as well, that it will be a lot larger then we all expect it to be.
I have faith in the human race to react in a way that will prevent anything widespread that is is capable of containing, and I think it can contain bird flu and others of its ilk. The thing I worry about is the next new outbreak of something completely new. It will make aids look like an alergy and cancer look like a bed rash. It will come one day, I am sure of it. As George Carlin would say, it is mother nature fighting back. It has been a long time, and I think she is just about ready to give her knock out punch. Lets hope we can stand after it.

Well.. I've been watching it for years now... long before the media ever began reporting about it.... Mostly you can read my reply to Gerry up above... would have said about the same thing here..

To reply as if I were replying to Ger's.

It is so true, mother nature could wipe out all humanity in less then 24 hours if it really wanted it and the sad part is, we are helping mother nature do it. We really do need to get away from using oil for so many things that would be one of the first issues I would say needs addressing. But I will leave that to you, as you said you have been studying this a hell of a lot longer then me. I only know what, and since when, the papers report, with the few rare things I looked up online trying to find additional information. Even being kept in the dark for the most part by the media, you know how they only say what they want to, and reading the tidbits they give here and there, things like the bird flu are scary even on a contained level and I know there is much worse out there.
Have you heard about the reappearence of Legioneers in NYC? Four deaths so far. They have yet to catch anyone alive with it so even see if it is the same strain.

but george carlin also had the rant about giving your immune system practice, so WHEN that disease comes along that "turns your insides into liquid shit" isn't so bad.

all i know is that japan is going to get it worst. everything is kept so sterile and clean there ALL THE TIME, that a new virus will pretty much have a clean slate to do wtf if wants.
