Twenty off sales at the local used bookstore are dangerous. I staggered out of there with a goodly stack of books, including, uh. Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, a book about the guy who discovered/invented/figured out longitude for the first time ever*, Robert Forward's Return to Rocheworld (the story sucks, but the alien science is beyond awesome), and a mystery by Lev Grossman called Codex.
* And, looking up the book, it turns out the title, which fills the entire front cover, is "Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time". How can you resist a book with a title like that, I ask you? *g*
