Is it wrong to marry your friend so they can legally stay in the country?

Let's just say, hypothetically, there's a guy with a friend from Tokyo that has to move back in April because her visa expires and her schooling in the US is complete.

I think they'd have to stay married for 2 years for her to gain residency. Anyone know for sure?

they also have to jump through hoops. i think the government checks on that shit.

The previous poster is indeed correct, it is not that simple.
My sister married a Japanese dude and he still had to go back to Japan. However, if this foreign born person has a job here that is willing to help them, they can establish residency in that way. It's a hassle either way.
