Jimmy had been camping a few times as a kid, back when he was a cub scout. This is not like any of those times. This is huddled on his ass against a tree trunk, in the rain, too many miles from anywhere, with a werewolf sitting on the ground ten feet from him. A big, hulking, black thing. Real wolves aren’t that big.

A real wolf would have probably killed him already.

“Look,” Jimmy tries, and he doesn’t even get the satisfaction of the were pricking its ears up, because all of its attention is already trained on him, pinning him in place with fear and certainty. “Look, I don’t even know where I am, okay? I just- I’d really like to try and find my family. See if they’re still alive.”

The wolf leans forwards, sniffs at him and Jimmy wonders if dogs can smell truth, or just fear. And then the wolf melts away and there’s a boy left in its place, crouching on the balls of his feet. His face is unlined but stern, and Jimmy finds it increasingly hard to think of the creature in front of him as a boy.

“You’re a hunter,” he says, a flat accusation.

“No. What? No, I-I just hang out with some. Two of them. Not even me, just my body.” The wolf-man raises an eyebrow, a single motion of disbelief, and Jimmy makes a mental note to start making sense sometime soon. “Look,” he pauses, swallows, and tries again. “Look, my name is Jimmy Novak, I’m from Pontiac, Illinois, and I am not in the driver’s seat of this body most of the time. And, those hunters? They’re probably looking for me but I have got no reason to want them to find me. So...”

The boy leans forwards, falling onto his hands and thrusting his nose at Jimmy so quickly that Jimmy cowers a little in response. It’s not a boy, his instincts tell him. You’re going to die, something in him knows.

“So what drives you?” it asks.

“Huh?”

Big, dark eyes, inches away from his own. “You said you’re not in the driver’s seat. What is?”

Jimmy swallows, the noise of it too loud and too nervous. “An angel.”

The wolf pulls back into his haunches and tosses his head back, barking a laugh. “Right,” he says, and his face is split in half with an easy, mocking grin. “What are you, schizophrenic?”

“I’m a vessel,” Jimmy replies. He tries to push himself up a little straighter, but his hands slide in the mud at the base of the tree. The wolf snorts and casts a casual look around; Jimmy thinks it might be some kind of sign he’s not considered a threat. He’s struggling to remember his nature documentaries right now. “You’re a werewolf,” Jimmy feels a need to point out. “And there are vampires crawling all over the place. Why not other things? Why not an angel?”

The boy looks back at him, he has the same expression on his face that Claire had when Jimmy told her she wasn’t old enough to have a mobile phone. Disbelief and irritation, and mild embarrassment for his outdated way of thinking. “What makes you think there are vamps around?” Caution in his voice though, the soundtrack and visuals not matching up.

“The trees,” Jimmy replies. “The way the branches are broken, up too high for a forest animal and too high for a human to bother with. But vampires are fast, and will fight anywhere. And I think some of them just like breaking things.”

The boy snorts a laugh. “Yeah, I guess that last part’s right.” He gives Jimmy a long, considering look, before shoving his hand into Jimmy’s face. “Jacob Black,” he says, coupling his invitation with a wide, white grin. “And you’re a few miles outside of Forks, Washington. Near the La Push community.”

After a moment of hesitation, Jimmy shakes the hand in front of him, and finds himself hauled to his feet. The hand is still wrapped around his, large and warm and gritty with damp earth. “Pleased to meet you,” Jimmy says to the boy who is barely shorter than him, and a lot stronger.

Jacob gives him an amused look, not believing the statement for a minute, before dropping Jimmy’s hand. “Come on,” he says, starting off into the forest. “Let’s find you a phone.”

Jimmy will be happy if the boy can find a pair of pants sometime soon.
