According to the
Washington Post, the Senate will soon vote on a new endangered species law that will give private landowners more protection against the government's ability to claim their land for wildlife protection. For a moment, set aside your feelings about whether or not the government should be allowed to do that.
Recall that
at the end of June, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of letting local governments seize land from private citizens for any reason they want, even if it's just to give it to corporations to make a tidy profit, as long as the city claims it's good for the city.
We can't have it both ways, people. Either the government has draconian power to seize land for "the public good" -- and, yes, protecting endangered species should be considered next to protecting Wal-Mart's bottom line -- or the government does not.
