Your Logical Intelligence is Genius
Your Verbal Intelligence is Genius
Your Mathematical Intelligence is Genius
Your General Knowledge is Genius

A Quick and Dirty IQ Test

I think I got them all right. Note that a 140 IQ is where "genius" typically begins (i.e., it's considered the bottom end of the genius scale). So this isn't a very good test, but you knew that since it has only 16 questions. ;) I generally test between 140-150 on better intelligence tests.

Logical Intelligence

1. Mary is two times as old as Nancy. Nancy is 1/3 Lucy's age. Who is the oldest?

Mary
Lucy
Nancy

Explanation: Mary is twice Nancy's age but Lucy is three times Nancy's age.

2. What is worth more a trunk full of nickels or a half trunk full of dimes?

The half trunk full of dimes
The trunk full of nickels
They are worth the same

Explanation: A half trunk is a (fake) unit of measure of volume. Dimes are worth twice as much as nickels. If dimes were the same size as nickels, a trunk-full of nickels would be worth the same as a half trunk-full of dimes, but dimes are smaller so there will be more of them in a half trunk-full.

Notes: Grammar, anyone? How about a colon for that question?

3. "If Jody doesn't pay her ticket, she will go to jail." Which other statement must be true?

If Jody doesn't go to jail, she paid her ticket.
If Jody pays her ticket, she won't go to jail.
If Jody goes to jail, she didn't pay her ticket.

Explanation: The contrapositive of a condition has the same truth value as the condition. The contrapositive of "If Jody doesn't pay her ticket, she will go to jail" is "If Jody will not go to jail, then Jody does pay her ticket." The first answer is closest.

Notes: I had a big problem with this one. None of the answers is technically correct! You cannot change verb tense in a contrapositive and expect a logically consistent answer.

4. Dave is offered a raise if he can increase his weekly productivity by 24%. If Dave works a six day week, how much does he need to increase his productivity each day?

24%
6%
4%

Explanation: The "each day" is a red herring. A 24% increase in productivity over the week means an average 24% increase in productivity every day.

Verbal Intelligence

5. Which word means "maze"?

Pundit
Labyrinth
Larceny
Placebo

Explanation: I think everyone knows what a labyrinth is, right? We've all seen David Bowie in the movie or played D&D.

6. Word is to Language as:

Paint is to Portrait
Poetry is to Rhythm
Note is to Music
Tale is to Story

Explanation: A word is a building block of language. A note is a building block of music.

7. "Give me my chair back, you _______"

Usurper
Utilitarian
Iconoclast
Reactionary

Explanation: A usurper is someone who takes something away from you. Like a chair.

8. The opposite of gregarious is:

Ingenuous
Taciturn
Loquacious
Convivial

Explanation: Gregarious people are outgoing and loud. Taciturn people are quiet and reserved.

Mathematical Intelligence

9. If 2x = 3, what does 6x equal?

6
8
9
12

Explanation: Simple algebra. 2x = 3, therefore x = 3/2 and 6x = 6(3/2) = 9. Or, if you prefer, 6x is three times greater than 2x and 2x=3, so 6x=9.

10. Every Sunday Julie bikes 2 miles. For the rest of the week, she bikes 1 mile more than the previous day. How many miles does Julie bike in 2 weeks?

70
86
56
35

Explanation: The first week, Julie bikes 2 miles on Sunday, 3 miles on Monday, 4 miles on Tuesday, and so on till Saturday when she bikes 8 miles. That's 35 miles for the week. The second week, Julie bikes 2 miles on Sunday... etc. for 35 more miles. Total for two weeks is 70 miles.

11. What number comes next? 2, 3, 5, 9, ?

15
17
18
14

Explanation: The series is n(i) = n(i-1) - 1. That is, multiply the previous number by 2 and subtract 1.

12. Which of the following is not a prime number?

83
87
73
79

Explanation: Numbers whose digits add up to numbers divisible by 3 are themselves divisible by 3. 87 --> 8+7 = 15 --> 1+5 = 6 and 6 is divisible by 3. Therefore, 87 is divisible by 3 and therefore not prime.

General Intelligence

13. Which of these US presidents did not serve in the 20th century?

Theodore Roosevelt
Dwight Eisenhower
George W. Bush
John F. Kennedy

Explanation: Teddy served in the early 1900's. Ike and JFK served in WWII in the 1940's. W served starting in 2000, which is the 21st century.

14. How many miles are in a kilometer?

.6
.06
1.6
6

Explanation: 1 km = 0.62 mi. (Actually, I just looked it up and it's 0.6213712 mi. Close enough.) Even if you didn't know the actual number, you should know that a km is smaller than a mile. That eliminates the last two answers. You also should know that a km isn't that much smaller than a mile so that eliminates .06 (there are not 17 km in a mile).

15. Which of the following countries was not part of the Allies in World War II?

Russia
France
Italy
China

Explanation: Italy fought with the Axis Nations alongside Nazi Germany. Recall Benito Mussolini and fascism.

16. Of the four languages below, which is the least widely spoken?

Arabic
Hindi
English
Chinese

Explanation: I think the quiz is wrong here but who knows. The question is so vague. Least widely spoken as a primary language? as an official language? as a primary or second/third language? I didn't agree with their answer so I did some research. Mandarin Chinese is the language most commonly spoken (by over a billion Chinese and lots of other people). English trails behind by a wide margin followed by Hindi, Spanish, Russian, then Arabic. But choosing Arabic instead of Hindi gets me a lower score on the quiz. I think they're wrong.
