I need more Doctor Who icons.

One of my first thoughts when The Sound of Drums ended was that they will have to undo the whole thing. With at least six hundred million people dead, this was the largest death count in the course of the whole series. Second, the massive change was done to none other than the present day continuity, something which has, so far, never been left with lasting changes of this size. The creators have paid much attention to keep up the sense of this mirror of our contemporary normal world in the present day continuity, and to keep the world the Master created would pose quite a lot of problems as the present day continuity would then become one of the many alternative futures and utopias-gone-bad, essentially reducing its importance and destroying its function as a point of origin for the new series.
Thirdly, as stated a couple of times by the different writers and producers, the series is ultimately about hope, which would again suffer majorly should the Master's world prevail. It's also a question about what this influential programme teaches to the many children watching it. I think that if I had to choose between a message that goes "Live your life, but anytime, something can come in, make the world a place much much worse and even though the bad guys are defeated you'll have to suffer the repercussions of the bad guys' actions" and between the messages given now: the message of the mediaeval morality play, that it's your choice, the Everyman's choice (in this case, Martha's mum) to decide between the Doctor's way and the Master's way; and also, the message that you've got a caretaker. That's the kind of message you want to kids, not the message of tyrannical overlords doing any destruction they want, that'd be kind of depressing.

One last note about Jack, Russell T Davies confirmed in the podcast I listened in to in the morning that he only thought up the Face of Boe being Jack in the third series, thus it's no wonder that there are inconsistencies between what was said about Boe in the first series and what we find out in this series. But for me, it was great fun to get to know this because it was another little twist I would have had no idea about, and I love that.
