Well what seemed like fun at first quickly turned into a tragedy at the Budapest fireworks. I'm posting as the news snippets are finally coming in.
- There was an estimated 800.000-1.5 million people outside to watch the fireworks when the chaotic rainstorm hit, causing massive panic and chaos.
- The wind speed was officially between 80 and 100 kilometres per hour (50 and 62 mph) so it was stronger than we thought. (I never felt wind so strong so I suspected it wasn't in the lower ranges)
- Temperature fell 5C (10F) in half an hour.
- Two of the three broadcasting televisions had to stop broadcasting or had equipment broken. Numerous cell phone stations have gone down, blocking phone calls.
- There are three reported deaths: A tribune on Batthyany square collapsed causing the rumoured death of one and possibly dozens of injuries. Adam Clark square also had some kind of damage resulting in another rumoured death. The wharf on the Pest side (where thousands gather to watch the fireworks) also has a reported death. One of our Charmed forumers saw someone being hit by a falling tree, and another forumer said that one of the casualties is a twelve year-old little girl.
- Two ships on the Danube collided, five people fell in the water but only four was rescued, one is still being searched for. Reports of other people falling into the water have also appeared.
- Many buildings and various rooftops were damaged and a large number of windows broken, injuring many. There are more than a hundred injured, say hospital correspondents.
- Trees falling from the storm have blocked roads and railroad tracks.
On top of it all, the boyfriend of one of my friends has not yet returned, even though almost four hours have passed. His cell phone doesn't answer either so she is quite worried...
