Occasionally everything in the universe will seem hostile and set against you.  The world will pulse with an anxious desire to wrap its hands around your throat.  The buzz of a broken headphone mocks you, the positioning of a couch seems organized with purposeful malice to trip you, the offhand comment from a coworker or friend seems designed to belittle you, the dirty glass of a smartphone becomes a schoolyard chant about misapplied funds and squandered potential.  Even the handyman working a power drill four blocks away must have been sent into existence with the explicit purpose of annoying and frazzling you.  At these times when everything in the universe seems a weapon turned toward you, when every hand seems to be grasping to drag you and hold you down, the only action that ever seems to meet the feeling and challenge it, in my experience, is to reach out (grasping and with purpose) and try to bring someone else up.
