Straight and to the point is probably the best way to get to it, so here you go: Robert Chase left the City.

If someone is counting on there being some kind of auction or yard sale or something, don't. If you touch his things, I'll knock your teeth out.

That's all. I just thought people might like to know.

Why would anyone expect a sale of his things? Here or not, they're still his, after all.

I've just heard that's what people do, sometimes.

Seems a strange way to treat someone else's belongings. Good of you not to, in any case.

I wasn't really being serious. I think people deal with loss in different ways. Some people like to hold onto the reminders, and other people just want to throw them away.

Awkward if the person comes back, I think.

But an understandable reaction, I suppose.

[ He doesn't approve, but that's another thing altogether. ]

I imagine you might be tired of being asked if you're all right or some variation.

I don't think I would be if-- well, I wasn't really. But even then Susan and I had each other. It was different.

Would you like any time off, or alternatively, more shifts?

I haven't decided whether or not I think he will, yet. Peter did, but that's Peter.

I'm okay. I'm not really okay. I'm dealing with it. Thanks for not asking, but I appreciate you asking indirectly.

A few days, maybe? I just need to get my head on straight.

We're flexible - as you know, really. Longstanding and all that.

Take any time you need.

[ Pause... ]

And you're welcome. I suppose I did.

Yeah, I know, and I'm pretty sure Ginny would take any of my shifts if it really came down to it.

But it'll only be a few days, honestly. This kind of thing is old news by now.

It's different for each person who leaves. We both know that.

But I leave it up to you of course. A few days - less or more. Your job's a stable thing.

[ No consolation, he knows, but all he means is, it'll be there whenever she wants it, that being the least he can do reliably. ]
