Minimum wage?

It's... the minimum wage you, as an employer, can pay your employees. Waitresses typically make less than that because we get tips to make up for what's supposed to be the difference.

Really? What happens if they don't?

Well, it's illegal. They have to pay that much. I mean... I guess here you could get away with it, because who would enforce it? But back home that's the way that it's supposed to work.

Huh. That's a pretty innovative idea.

Don't they have anything like that where you come from? I mean... in the Capitol?

Not that I've ever heard. But I don't have a job back home, either.

Do you like having a job, here?

It's got its perks. I like bringing in some money of my own so I'm not making Peeta do all the work. And I like talking to all the people who come in--even the ones who aren't doing it just to flirt with me.

I didn't realize you were aware those people existed.

It is kind of nice, though, working. And working someplace consistently.

I'm usually aware of a lot more than I let on. I like surprising people.

I could do without the early mornings, though.

You could always just pop out of a box to achieve that effect.

What time do you go in?

But I don't have a box.

It kind of depends. If Peeta's trying to make me suffer because I ate his frosting again, we go in around four in the morning. If I'm free of his wrath for another day, I usually make it in around ten or so. But I just work the register, so I don't need to be in early to bake or anything.

There are plenty of them just lying around in the alleys.

So if you're being punished then you're going in when I'm finally getting to bed. I can't decide which one is worse. I guess it depends on how often Peeta has to make you suffer.

You don't honestly think Cinna would let me wear an alley box, do you?

See, normally I'd be getting to bed at that hour, too. Back before I started working, I'd sometimes say hi to Peeta while he was on his way out and I was on my way in.

It's not like you'd be wearing it. You'd just have to pop out. You could carry it around with you and hop inside whenever you need to.

What were you doing up that late?
