Chapter 4: Little Sorrow Part One
Laura watched as her aide Billy scratched his head and looked around him. She had send him about half an hour ago to get Starlight and had gotten worried that something might have happened, thus she decided to abandon her work in the Admiral’s office and came looking for them. Now, the young man appeared as confused as the first time when he had gotten lost in Galactica and Laura knew that by now Billy more than knew his way around the Battlestar.
“Billy?” Laura called causing the aide to jump at the sound of her voice.
“Ohm…Madam President!” Billy replies.
“Is everything okay? I sent you for Starlight a while ago. I was worrying that something might have happened.”
Billy lowers his face, “Well, actually Ma’am…I had her in my line of vision one minute and then in the next she was…gone.”
Ah, now I understand! Star, pulled her disappearing act on him…Well, after what happened a few hours ago, Star is keeping her guard up. Very presidential like, Laura moves to the closes bulkhead, makes sure no one except for Billy can see what she is about to do; she raised her hand, “Alright Admiral, lets see if what you said was true.” Laura knocks four times in the bulkhead before leaving her hand against it. “It’s Laura,” she whispers.
One day ago, Colonial One. The President and Admiral of the Fleet sat across from each other, each with a drink in hand. Their meeting had been over no more than15 minutes when Adama had begun to relate to Laura how Starlight had pushed Ellen Tigh into a pile of manure when she had been eight years old.
“Next thing Saul and I know Ellen is falling face down on the mountain of manure. We thought she might have slipped or something, but when we were finally able to get to the barn surprise, surprise! Starlight was swinging from a rope right above Ellen, laughing and taking pictures galore.”
Laura’s laughter filled the room, “So…she got her revenge on Ellen after all!”
“Yup!” but Bill’s eyes were not filled with humor.
Something passed in them that worried Laura. As if a memory not wanted had returned bringing with it painful feelings. “Bill…”
“If it were not for Ellen…My daughter would be dead.”
This caught Laura off guard. She sets her drink down and stares at Bill.
“My daughter wears t-shirts and jeans all that time for one good reason…Scars. Scars left on her back by her own mother. The one person, who was meant to love her, hated her more than life itself.”
“Caroline,” Laura whispers.
Adama nods, “I knew I shouldn’t have left Starlight alone with her that week but I had no control over the meeting I need it to attend. Two days later I received an urgent call from Ellen, Starlight had been beaten pretty badly by Caroline. Whipped severely on the back, she’d said…”
William Adama drove his car like a mad man through the streets of Caprica City. His mind set on one thing only; get to the Elemental hospital as fast as he could. The wheels on the automobile screeched in the pavement as he came to a harsh stop at the Hospital’s entrance.
The guards posted always at the doors came running to him and guided him in. No need to sing papers, no ID need, and this people knew who his child was and how critical her health was at the moment.
“Commander, your daughter is now being taken to surgery room eight,” the silver haired guard informed him as they entered and elevator.
“She has lost a lot of blood, the doctors are doing all they can,” the other guard added. The elevator goes up to the fourth floor.
There Bill is met by the tear filled eyes of Ellen Tigh. Her shirt covered in blood, as is her face and hands. Now, Ellen is not one to care for many, but Starlight had always brought out something motherly in the woman-even though she did like teasing the girl a bit.
“Ellen,” Bill speaks.
The frightened blonde run to his side, “Gods, Bill…”
“What in the world happened?”
“I…I don’t know really know…” Ellen shakes her head. “I went to check on Star; Saul had said she was alone with Caroline. I know how things get between them when left alone, so I went to check in on her. I knocked at the door but got no answer. As I headed back to my car I heard screaming from the back of the house…” Ellen shudders, “I walked towards the sound…Starlight was tied against the wall facing away from Caroline. She was being whipped by her MOTHER. HER MOTHER, BILL! Next thing I know I tackled Caroline to the ground took the whip away and untied Starlight. She was bleeding…so much blood…She was barely breathing…”
Bill fisted his hands. He wanted to go down to find Caroline and break her neck. How could she have done such a thing to her child…No Starlight was not her child, no mother would do something like this to their child.
A nurse with pretty brown eyes came their way, “Commander Adama…”
Bill snapped out of his thoughts, “Yes?”
“The Elemental Quorum is here, they would like to have a word with you.”
Damn, if the Quorum is here…Bill nods to the nurse, “Where are they?”
“Level four, I will take you to them.”
“Thank you,” Bill turns to Ellen. “Ellen, go home to Saul and ask him to bring me the papers I gave him to keep in lock.”
Ellen stared at him, “They’re gonna take her away aren’t they?”
Bill shook his head, “Not if I have anything to do with it. Now please…”
Ellen nods, “Alright, Bill.”
Bill gives her a small smile as he watches the blonde go. Who would have thought Ellen cared so much for his daughter? “
Commander, if you would follow me,” the nurse said.
“Lead the way.”
*~*~*~*~*
Meanwhile, in another part of the Fleet unknown to the President or the Admiral, a plan that had been far too long kept aside, was not being set into motion. While memories were being told to one another, the life of one whom has been dictated as the first to die of many would be far more in danger than either could predict. In the midst of this plan, a man smiled, and the spirits of long ago sought a way to stop what was coming.
Within this world of spirits one awoke from slumber and searched among the many humans within the fleet, the ones the soul used to know. From one ship to another searching, calling, but no answer ever came…
