I am angry. More angry I've ever been about anything else in my life. It all has to do with corporations, I HATE THEM! They will be the downfall of this country as they hold many politicians in their pocket with the great amount of money they give to them in which prevent them from challenging corporations, they control all forms of the media and as they consolidate and merge with one another there become less and less diverse voices in the media, they deprive Americans of jobs by exporting jobs overseas, exploit underdeveloped countries by creating sweatshops that have horrible conditions and little pay. With the current deregulation pattern of corporations in the US, there is no stopping them in there pursuit to dominate our economy and prevent economic competition. Since the corporations own the media, there is no open forum with a wide audience for these issues that our damaging to our country because it is critical of the corporations themselves thus they prevent those kind of stories from being reported. Corporations censor newspapers and tv shows from reporting on critical stories about any company they own by putting pressure on editors/producers and reporters. Furthermore, corporations limit our choices and control prices to their own liking.
What bothers me the most is the consolidation and merging of mass media corporations. In my comm 101 class I just read this chapter about media corporations. Many media companies have skirted monopoly charges by purchasing diverse types of mass media rather than trying to control just one medium. Thus promoting oligopolies in which a few behemoth companies control media production and distribution. Time Warner, for example, has holdings among television programming, film, music, publishing, cable, and its Internet divisions. In many regions of this country, only one cable company or newspaper exists in local monopolies, dominating what goes onto TV and into newspapers. Our ideal of freedom of expression through the media is being crushed by corporate greed and expansion. The media corporations control what is seen through all forms of medium. Furthermore, quality in the media, especially in TV and radio suffers. Radio stations are limited to playing only certain kinds of music that will attract large audiences, instead of being able to play unknown music or bands. These media giants expand internationally, destroying native cultures by transplanting US pop culture to the world. They can export US TV shows at cheaper costs to other countries than the cost of other countries to create their own native shows. Even the internet is being sold out to corporations as they buy up search engines and charge websites fees to be in the search engine and to get priority placement within the search engine.
Something has to be done, I've never felt so inspired in my life to do something. A movement must happen, end corporate domination. I don't know how I can go about doing this but I'm gonna find out how. Somehow, we must get politicians to see that corporations are damaging this country and this trend of deregulation must end. Pressure must be put on corporations to split up and ensure economic competition just like it was done in the early 1900s. If this doesn't happen, our country is doomed. Something drastic must happen for people to see that this is necessary because getting media attention to these issues (as I said before) won't be easy. We must be the watchdogs! If you value freedom of expression, you should support this too. To ensure that the diverse views are seen in the media, these media conglomerates must be taken on. If enough people are aware and care, thats when change happens, just the way to getting there is the hard part.
