At what point do you give up?

When do you cut your losses and forget it? With situations, the point of no return is often clear. But with people, things become so much more complicated. At what point have things progressed so far, when someone has changed so much, that you have to cut ties just to spare yourself. I don't know. I used to in the past. When a person has changed so badly and nothing you can do will bring back that lively wonderful person you used to know, it's over. When someone is so dead set on something that nothing you can do or say will ever show them that they are either pushing away someone who actually cares for them or walking head first into their own undoing, it's over. But when you are in the gray area ... what then? When do things become unsalvageable when the process takes months? Years? When promises can't be believed, when justifications ring empty and you just wish you could save someone but they do not want to be saved, what do you do? When you've gotten lost in another person's world, is it time to walk away?
