What is it that brings us together?
Mutual interests. Whether it be politics, religion, or physical activity, the things we have in common are the things that bring us together and keep us together. I found a great group of friends in VA simply by joining a climbing gym.
In high school, I was always mystified by how easy it was for my friend, Whitney, to make friends. She had a new best friend every week. I, on the other hand, wanted to hang out with people, but never knew what to DO. Perhaps this was due, in part, to living in a small rural town (i.e. there is NOTHING to do in Fremont, MI). But perhaps I was approaching the situation from the wrong angle.
About a month ago, I was having a gchat conversation with a friend about online dating services. When I told him that I was thinking about joining one to meet guys, he promptly said NO! He said that I do not need a computer to match my personality and then pick from a group of desperate people. His advice was "Do things you like, meet people that are doing the same." I have been marinating on that advice ever since.
I am back in Fremont for winter break and have largely been hanging out at home with my family. We completed two puzzles, 1000 and 1500 pieces each. Which is impressive, I know... but the only time I've left the house is to go to yoga with my mom, Zumba (Latin dance exercise) with my sister , and to a friend's birthday party. I want to spend more time with my friends while I am home, but feel unfulfilled when we just sit and watch tv... Then, last night at 2am, while tossing and turning in bed, it dawned on me that I could invite my friends to come to the health club with me!
Doing Zumba with my sister on Saturday was both our first time. We arrived late and were both lost and looking quite uncoordinated in the back of the room. The dance steps are not complicated, but it is difficult to learn when the music goes so fast! I am excited to go again tonight and tomorrow night. I hope that Steph and/or Rachel come with!
